CA Fickel Rotaries

Well I think with 630 miles the new motor is Toast. Cruising throught the twisties, downshifted to hit a corner it backfired and as I went to accelerate out of the corner it began to miss and run real rough, then it died and now acts like it's flooding, pulled the plugs all nice and black no indication of any lean conditions, checked compression. low compression on front rotor (45-55-40) and it has a knock when turning over. S4 T2 Rotary Performance Build. Street port, stock injectors stock air box, and stock intercooler no boos over 3 PSI during the first 500 miles and running 20 W 50 Castrol . any guesses of what could have gone wrong ? or are these motors just that tempermental, or did I not break it in properly?

well from my experience you should not be in boost at all during the break in period. They are not fickel either builder error or user error.

time to pull and rebuild...sorry man

It's hard to say. Perhaps there was a mistake in the build (ie. excessive apex seal clearance)?

It's hard to say. It could be builder error although RP is pretty reputable and not known for being half assed. It doesn't sound like tuning since this is all stock. Who knows. Maybe you had an injector that had a problem. That happens from time to time. Whatever caused it, don't jump to conclusions in an effort to place blame on someone. There is always the possibility that it was no ones fault and that it was just something that happened. Especially if it was fuel related.

I would not blame RP as I think they do great work. I was merely searching for answers. so I will continue to look at all the posibilities and draw my conclusion from there. It may be simply that something went wrong. and as you said no one is to blame things do happen in this universe.

Personally, Breaking in these engine is over rated. i still do it.. i just think its over rated. of 4 motors( for one car) i've usually done a 1500 mile break-in, however i once decided to see if a 47 mile breakin would be good enough, that motor lasted 12k miles until it blew the turbo coolant line, overheated, and cracked the rear water jacket. the rotors and housings and all seals were reused.

Only dissasembly of your motor will provide sufficient explenation, which saidly will have to be done at the shop for there warrenty to be valid. Happy Rotarding.
