FD Torsen Diff??

Any body know if you can use a FD torsen Diff in a FC? Would it be like a direct replacement, as if you would buy someother after market one?

it will fit fine in a Turbo Diff, however it will not fit into a non-turbo diff.

Really? Do you know the reason for that? Does that mean a non turbo viscous diff it different from the turbo? Because i know they both have the same finall drive, NA and turbo that is...

different size.

N/A rear end uses a 7" diff, while a Turbo and the FD use a 8".

Well I'll be damned! That sucks! What the hell was mazda thinking?!?! On another note, would that make a Viscous from a Turbo not fit in a NA? If so my friend might be screwed, he bought a Viscous from Japan and they only sold Turbos there... Another place were the US lucked out...

He would have to swap his rear end to a Turbo rear end to use that diff. If he doesn't want to swap the rear ends, then he should look for a Miata (MX-5 or Enos Roadster in Japan) rear end as it uses the same 7" guts that the N/A FC did.

This was posted in the last month:

LSD check
With the tranny in neutral.
If both wheels tend to spin the same direction - LSD.
If the wheels tend to turn opposite directions - open diff.

I've been looking at the torsen type diffs on ebay also for the past couple of months and thinking about getting one for my TII but was wondering how difficult it would be to get new bearings for the diff if I was to buy one? Is it something the local Mazda house can get or is it a JDM deal. They say they come out of a 1999 RX-7 Type RB-S which is not an american model.

I have not tried, but I wouldn't think at the very least that the FD Torsen would fit a N/A, without getting a new ring and pinion and spacing it correctly. Evene then its a matter of seeing if the N/A diff assembly would hold the 8" FD diff.

No such thing, at least according to Mazda. In 1991 there were three choices - coupe, turbo or convertible. The coupe had two option packages. It may be fully loaded like a GXL, but it's just "Coupe".

They were thinking how much more power and torque the Turbo has compared to the NA...

The FD Torsen diff won't fit the NA gears/housing, but the Miata one will. This has been discussed before, so a search will give you the answers you need.
