Fd to T2 Diff swap?

Hi All,

I'm thinking of swaping my 1990 T2 verts Stock diff for a Fd one.

There are a few things i would like to know such as What parts are interchangable and whats not?

I know the diff its self is but what about the gears and output shafts etc?

While i've brought up the subject of gears, Being a Uk spec T2 Vert (same as the jap spec Turbo vert) will i have a diffrent ratio? If so which is best to use with a Tweeked motor?

last question, Is there a write up or somthing to show me how to set up the back lash etc in the diff? I'm usaly S**t at rebuilding Gear box's and i feel a Diff is in the same category.

Cheers

Chris

Are you talking the whole differential including the housing?
If so, they are NOT swappable.

The "guts" are interchangable.
Yes, the stock FD Torsen LSD can be stuffed into an FC turbo rear end.

The FC and the MX5 G1 share the same bolt up patern to the sub frame. But the FD does not.

Right ok so the case isn't interchangeable but i was told that the diff has to have the Back lash set up on it when they are swaped? Is an Fd diff swap a straght forward enough job?

Does any one know what the two diff ratio's are as well?

Cheers

The ratios are all the same - 4.10:1.
So there is no advatange (or disadvantage) to swapping out the pinion and ring gears.
The only advantage is the Torsen LSD.

ANY work on the rear diff (pinion, ring gear, or LSD install or removal) requires proper backlash adjustment.
Any competent drivetrain shop locally can help you with that.

Becouse i like the feel of Fd's, Also my T2 diff is Trash. If you put any more than 200hp through it one wheel spins (i guess its old and tired).

The S4 Diff does sound good but i here they need rebuilding quite often whith high hp aplications?

Cause FD owners are stupid and want something a little more robust.
This does NOT mean the clutch-type LSD is "better".
The Torsen locks up more linearly, and it's a bit more easier to control.
Do a search on Torsen versus clutch-type LSD, and there's several threads on this.
A clutch-type can be stronger than a Torsen - this is why aftermarket LSD's are almost always clutch-types.
Just because it's stronger doesn't mean it's better...

Define "high load"?
Drag racing?
Yes.

Road racing?
I doubt it, unless we're talking over 500 lb-ft of torque, and you're a monkey with the gas pedal?
