I think Banzai Racing rebuilds trannies?

I had mine rebuilt at a local shop. The R-type tranny (T2, FD) is very similar to the Ford Ranger tranny. There are some minor differences between the 86-87 1/2 built ones and the 88. The shop that rebuilt my tranny had some trouble finding an appropriate 5th gear synchro due to some mixed up part numbers or something.

I dont think shipping a trans from canada to wisconsin is feasable.

The shop I went to for example., the rebuilder has been there as long as I have been going there, and thats coming up on 20 years. Never had one of his go bad on me.

You dont need mazdatrix for parts, let the shop do thier thing.

rebuilding these isnt too bad, but its more money than getting another used one. you also need the crazy long puller set...

to give some idea, just the bearings and synchros are in the $400 range.

the NA trans in my 1st gen i rebuilt myself, cost was probably in the $600 range, but i changed all the forks and sliders too

Syncro's are an entire assembly of parts, most of which wear very little. The "soft wear" parts, the blocking rings (made from brass so that they wear first) are the parts to replace.

Depending on transmission year and model, the cars will have 5 or 6 blocking rings. Unknown to most, the TII transmissions are syncronized on all gears, including reverse.

Once the blocking ring is worn out, the teeth in the hub on on the gear can grind against each other, and wear. Severely grinding transmission can need one of the two replaced, which starts to add up quickly... although sometimes the teeth can be hand filed back to within spec.

The bearings should also always be replaced whenever the transmission is opened up.

The problem with rebuilding a trans yourself is all the specialized tools required and having to order the correct shims to correct for endplay.

Original owner '89 TII. Had the trans rebuilt twice. First time at 92,000 miles by Mazda under an extended warranty, then again at 155,000 by KD Rotary when Dave replaced the engine, had him pull the trans and do the job.

Thanks guys for all the responses... this really helps me gauge approx how much I should expect to pay for a tranny rebuilt on my TII and what's involved. My main concern was really whether or not the tranny could actually be rebuilt by a good transmission shop. Thanks again!

I had mine rebuilt years ago by a local shop. I don't recall exactly what they replaced but I think it was syncros, input shaft, bearings, seals and the standard "soft" parts. The cost was $600 Canadian and it drove like a new transmission until I blew the input shaft apart with 400HP.

If you can find a used transmission in great shape for $150-$200 then you can go that route. But most of the RX-7 transmissions these days are just plain worn out. Spend a few hundred more for a rebuild and I bet you will be very happy.

Buy a low mile Jspec and be done

I have atleast.....25 or more in inventory now

I have S4 TII and S5 TII

$250.00 plus shipping

Far less than a rebuild... even with freight shipping added in...

^ T2 trans is pretty strong I don't know if one is better than the other. But if my trans went out I would just replace it.

Hmmn sorry to thread jack but after reading this I'm a little worried. My car should make around 450hp at the wheels next week, how longs the trans gonna last?

Edit: The clutch and diff aren't gonna let go either lol so if something goes it's gonna be the trans, its a manual

for regular street driving it will last a long time, if you plan on launching your car at the track or abusing it on a regular basis then a trans change might be the price to pay for all that

there are people running the stock TII trans and diff who are picking the front wheels up and running 9's. so they are plenty strong. but how many times can they take it is the answer. One guy (with an LS1 FC) still had the TII rear with over 400 launches on it with slicks. But i have also seen them break on one good launch from a 500hp FC.

so who knows?

At those power levels most begin contemplating a Cobra diff transplant.
