FC3S: Can an RX7 tranny be rebuilt?
Hey guys: I have an 89 T2 and I was just wondering if a transmission can be rebuilt so that it performs 100% again? If so, can any reputable transmission repair shop (i.e. Mr. Transmission) do this kind of rebuild? Any recommendations? Many thanks in advance.

I had all the "soft" parts rebuilt in my trans when I did my swap, there was nothing wrong with it I just wanted all the wear items replaced.
I ended up with a silent transmission that is really smooth, and lighter by about $650 in the wallet.
If your trans is toast I would suggest finding a $150-$200 used one.

The cost doesn't matter to me. I would just replace all wear parts as well. I just have a light grind into 2nd and into 5th sometimes. Could be the shitty Wolf fluid i had to put in it. I may also look into getting all the hard parts cryo-treated and the case and bellhousing powdercoated.

Nope it cannot be rebuilt, it is too old. It is IMPOSSIBLE to rebuild it, meaning you would have to defy the laws of physics in order to remove all of the worn out parts and replace them, it simply cannot be done.
/sarcasm j/k...
I personally think $650 is ridiculous for replacing all the soft parts in the tranny and not touching the gears and synchros. TII trannies are very strong, it is unlikely to find a bad one. I say buy a used unit from Japan2LA. The one I got from him feels like its brand new, you can shift like a complete noob (slam the shifter into a lower gear at high speed w/o rev matching) and it'll slide in like you matched revs.
I had a friend with a transaxle from a 3000GT that he took to a tranny shop (took it out himself) and had a couple synchros replaced (only the bad ones). Cost him about $500 altogether no hookup.

Transmissions are the type of thing that you REALLY need to know what you're doing when rebuilding. I had to make some custom tools to rebuild my NA transmission. I've never cracked open a TII trans, but let me say now that you'd better be good at welding if you want to make tools to rebuild a transmission.
Have it done professionally, and use a good quality gear lube. I REALLY liked using amsoil synthetic 75w90, but each person has their own favorite.

Don't know about your area. But here in So Cal, most of the Transmission shops around here only work on automatics. If a manual tranny comes in for rebuild, more often than not they pull it and send it to Anaheim Gear who specializes in manual trannys. Knowing that, I've cut out the middle man cost load and just take my tranny there directly.
My point, there is probably an Anaheim Gear like rebuilder in your area. Just ask a few local tranny shops for a referal.

I've spent far more than I'd like on rebuild costs for my old NA transmission. A couple synchros and the main bearing were replaced at two different times. Each time ended up taking about 10 labor hours, so do the math on that. It hurts. Good used NA transmissions are not easy to come by, which is why I ended up going for rebuilding.
Now I'm enjoying a stout TII transmission, and even have a spare sitting around just in case. It's easy to get a good used TII trans.

jackstransmission.com libertytransmission.com and a number of other do rebuilds from factory-high performance applications
also there is this little site called google.com that was a huge data base of websites that can help you with whatever you need.
for anyone on here that doesnt know anything about cars EVERY TRANSMISSION CAN BE REBUILT!!!! you can buy parts and do it yourself or pay someone else to do it for you and any transmission that has ever been made for anything
