FC will start but won’t idle.

Hi everyone - I got a ‘90 FC. Last time I tried to start it, it would turn on, but wouldn’t maintain its idle & would die.

Any idea what could that be?

I would say a vacuum leak or an air intake leak.

Will it run with your foot on the acceleration pedal?
If it can, the accelerated warmup system is broken or missing.

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the insight. I'll have to check, but it might have still died when I tried to gas it.

Might give the AFM and water thermo sensor connectors a quick check too. Make sure they are plugged in fully and the locking tabs aren't broken off.

Would that even prevent a no idle?

All of a sudden my Vert decided to no hold its own idle but I can keep it running with the gas pedal. It was running fine all summer.

As far as i know, yes. Among others too.

As far as your problem, some more information is helpful. Does the car run fine after warmup? If it does, the first thing that I would look at it is the accelerated warmup system.

Even with my car having a very lousy idle condition. My car always went into the higher RPM warmup with a cold engine even in warm weather. It will hit near 3k and then drop. If you have never had this happen, your is missing or broken.

Prior to this issue, it always had a hunting idle until it warmed up and then it was fine. The OMP went on my vert which is an S5 so I replaced that and it was fine again. Now I try to drive it and it won't hold idle unless I hold the throttle and coming up to stop signs or lights I have to put it in neutral and hold the gas to keep it going.

It always did used to jump to 3k as usual.

The hunting idle never bothered me because it drove fine and always went away when warm.

I adjusted the TPS per specs when fully warmed and it's fine as well. I can turn the throttle bypass screw all the way both directions and it doesn't help either.

I have somewhat a similar problem. Car stalls due to a low idle. I need to do the idle set procedure and start again with troubleshooting.

Are you setting the TPS to 1 volt. i set mine to 1 ohm. There seems to be some information here listed both ways. Also, make sure that you disable the computer when adjusting the idle with the jumper wire..

There are a ton of threads on idle hunting on here, best wishes.

Let us know if you find a solution.

I recently had one of the pins of the Idle Air Valve fall out of its attachment, I took it apart, and bent the part of the pin that hold it and reseated it, until it clicked into place. The IAV had stopped working because of this.

I do need to find replacement rubber now though

your Lead Plugs are fouled only. Remove them and torch both of them for a Minute then re-install them.

I heard that even with fouled leading plugs that the car should still run normally. I am having the same problem as OP recently but I will give it a try. I put new plugs and wires in the fall and did not drive it much since then because the issue came up in November.

you can try injecting one ounce of marvel mystery oil into the Lead plug(s) only, remove the EGI fuse, get in the car crank it for 15 sec while pressing the gas pedal to the floor & release gas pedal after 15 sec, re-install EGI fuse, Turn ignition. nay have to do this 2-5 times (maybe a lil more) for series 5
