If it's the one on the back of the water pump and between the thermostat and radiator, it's the one that sends water temp readings to the fuel control unit. If it's unpluged or bad, the car will default to hot temp mode and will lean out the fuel mixture making starting difficult.
BTW, there's a third temp sensor on the bottom of the radiator. I don't know what it does and I have no clue why mazda couldn't have just made one temp sensor for everything.

so does the temp sendor on top of the thermo stat housing provide a grounding type switch?
obviously it isnt going to produce power so if i hook my relay upto that with the sensor hooked up to the earth side of the switching circit( on the relay ) i can use it as a thermo fan thermostat swtich?

na that is a bit high, to high for my liking anyway. Is there anything that is already in the car that can be used for a temp switch that is more around the 185-190 level?
