AB FC sadness

Okay... where do I begin???

oh... I know...

-I bought a second hand S4 FC 4 months ago in October for $500. Everything seemed fine at first.

-$100 to tow it to my mechanic. No big deal.

-3 weeks passes by, I find out that I need another $1800 to have it ready for the road.

-A set of 4 tires, 2 brake rotors, 4 new brake pads, 1 rotor bearing, windshield wiper motor, injectors cleaned, 2 new windshield wipers and and another week later goes by.

-First week of December, I call my mechanic again. My turn signals wont work so I need a new turn signal module.

-Mid December, I finally get my car!!! and it gets delivered to my house, SWEET!!!

-Windshield wiper switch doesn't work, ok... I find another one. At the same time, I find a 10000 rpm 300KMH FEED speed gauge cluster for $600 and so I got it.

-First day I have my car and I get to drive it to school, everything seemed normal until I got on the highway. I was going 100KMH then suddenly I dropped to 60KMH??? I was like "what the..." so I went one gear lower then I dropped to 40KMH??? ok, I'm now going 40 in a 100 zone... not good!!! I went down one gear again and I noticed that I stopped completely... definitely not good while I'm in the middle of traffic!!! I managed to get myself into the traffic shoulder. Hours pass by I finally get a tow. The tow guy mangles my right front fender in the process of towing my car. "%$@#-in @$$-hole!!!" Spend another $100 for another tow to my mechanic. Days later my mechanic tells me that that I need a new Idle Control Valve.

-Days before Christmas, I get my windshield wiper switch and ICV delivered "ABOUT TIME!!!" now straight to my mechanics place. "don't need the switch anymore, I got you one already" damnit... what am I going to do with this one? oh well.

-Days after New Years, my mechanic tells me there's nothing wrong with the ICV and now that I need a Fuel Pressure Regulator. So I go shopping for one. It's been 3 weeks and my $600 FEED gauge cluster still has not arrived yet.

-Today, with the time and money that has gone by... realizing that I could have gotten a 20B engine instead. While I'm on the internet, I'm looking for parts and reading up to see what other possible problems that I have to deal with my FC.

Summary, 4 months since I've gotten my FC and I've spent only 7 minutes driving it. Even opened a new insurance policy for my FC and put a $300 down payment for the insurance and as well as paying $60 for a new license plate and another $50 for the registration. At first the engine was pulsing then the problem was solved. The turn signals didn't work either but then that was solved also. I really have no idea what is going on with my FC. All I know is that I tried to idle the engine but it was not idling as if no fuel was going though. The injectors were cleaned and yet nothing changed, got a new ICV and still nothing changed, hoping it's only the FPR.

I'm open for any other suggestions as to what is wrong with my car. Right now I'm even looking into a new fuel pump, ECU, RC injectors and an engine swap.

well my mechanic isn't really experienced with Rx7's and yeah, FC's are pretty rare in Calgary and FD's are even more (rare I mean as in LHD not JDM)

I have an NA S4

Don't take an RX-7 to an average joe mechanic. You need to find a rotary guy or start working on the car yourself. There is enough knowledge and information on these forums to help with literally any problem you encounter with these cars.

Download the Factory Service Manual and get to work. Start the troubleshooting process with a compression test.

yeah... I've thought about that...

that reminds me, the FC that I bought originally had a fuel cut off switch that had been already been installed. I'm thinking about having it uninstalled then having it re-installed.

FC Owner sadness.......

wow, $600 on a gauge cluster?!?!?

Look man, forget everything have been thinking so far, especially the nonsense about a 20B swap.

$1,800 for tires, half of a brake job and wipers in absolutely ludicrous.

If I were you, I would have the car towed home from that shop immediately. Then I would start reading the FAQ and the FSM. But then again, I wouldn't have spent $600 on a gauge cluster for a FC that cost $500.

Your going to want to check your compression first, that is to make sure the engine isn't complete garbage.

If i remember correctly, werent those feed gauges on ebay for a series 5? Your problem sounds like it could be air flow meter related. When mine went the car was breaking up real bad until i (almost immediately) pulled off the road. The "non working afm" will enable the car to start for aboot (trying to fit in ) 3 seconds, then shut off. Please Get your car oot of that mechanshits garage, and take start working on it like people said earlier. It is gonna get even more expensive very quickly because he is going to charge you for his lack of understanding and wasted time.

What exactly is the car doing when you say "not idling" do you mean "not running" or "not idling like it should at 850 rpms"

I think hes' got a Vacuum leak from that Mechanic cleaning his injectors.Maybe a line fell off.But keep him away from your Car.He don't know squat!
Look up www.bcrotary.com It is a "local Site".The Guys there are off the wall but they can tell you Who to talk to around your area.I'm surprised 84stock didn't say anything.

are you mechanically inclined? most of the stuff on the fc is not that hard to do.. especially if its a n/a... lol don't feel bad!! my fc was down for 2 months for bad wiring from a relay to the fuel pump.. now my brake lights don't work! LOL ! old cars = old problems but hey they keep you busy and learning more. thats what i like! check out the 2 gen FAQS and FSM..

but first do a full tune up! oil change, trany oil change, rear end oil change, plugs , wires, air filter, fuel filter. not unless your mechanic did that for you already?

no I did not go to Ebay and shopped there for the cluster and yes there are clusters for an S4 and S5

pics to prove

and keeping it my mechanic's place is better than my own, there's 3 feet of snow piled up where I am so may as well keep it indoors and plus I do not have to time to work on it myself because I'm in school.

did the full tune up already, thus my mechanic charged me $1800 FOR EVERYTHING. Currently don't have the time nor space to work on my FC and plus I have another reason to keep it out of the snow.

won't cost me that much, I have a source in japan where I can get 20B's (ENGINE ONLY, I have other sources for wire harnesses + ECU's) for $3000CDN with shipping included (wire harnesses about $200CDN and ECU about $600CDN)

You will be in WAY over your head and WAY over budget if you attempt this swap.

I'll top that. My FC hasn't been running for 4 months because I'm waiting on my lengthened wiring harness.

Just further proves that you're better off doing most of the work yourself unless you've got a local Wankel-head to lend a hand.
