Hello guys, I'm completely new to this site and to rotary as well. I always loved RX7s but I was never mechanicaly handy and didn't understand many things so I've never realy considered owning one. I own Mazda mx-5 NA which I'm learning on, but its not much.
Anyway, yesterday I was just cruising in my mx-5 when I stumbled upon this white rx7 next to a pub. I had to stop to look at it, the owner of the rx7 owns the pub and the car is sitting there like this for 10 years. I asked him if he wants to sell it. He said yes, but at a very high price in my opinion, so i wanted to ask you, if you think its worth saving (if its even possible) and what price could it have. He didn't have keys with him, so i couldnt check the engine but he looked like he knew how to take care of rotary (at least a little) and told me its N/A. I don't have photos of the interior, but nothing of it was missing, it looked surprisingly clean.
I've read the FAQ for buying FC, but it was written for cars not like that
The sport model duckbill spoiler is worth more than the chassis.
I would pass on that unless you got it for some incredibly cheap price. It's a parts car at best with that much rust, unless they're very very rare in your area.
EDIT: The moonroof is also worth more than the chassis, come to think of it.
I normally look for Rx7s without rust because I don't paint cars and I like original paint. I also look for cars that run because I'm not a mechanic. I did buy one once with a carbon filled engine but the body and interior were in almost perfect condition. my 2 cents

I wanted to offer him 2000 USD aproximately. It was random encounter and when I asked him if he wanted to sell it, he wasn't quite ready and didnt know what to ask for, but than he said he wants 5500 USD which is nonsense in my opinion.
But yeah, it's very rare in my country, I live in Czech Republic and I think theres like 6 FDs in the whole country, dunno about FCs tho, but it will be similar. Thank you for your opinion tho.
The rotten sills look pretty rotten. Are you the first person to ask about the car in ten years?
He said some people stopped by just like me to ask about the car, but i dont know anything else.

It's hard to get them in my country, but i completly understand. I was that i could learn a lot on this car, but im afraid it could be too difficult for me.

The guy told me there were some people like me that stopped by to ask about the car, but I don't think nothing serious. but yeah, the car is in very bad condition.
Anyway thank you guys for your comments, I appreciate it.
2000$ sounds too much, for reference someone is selling one that is disassembled (supposedly has all parts, working engine, with a non-rusty chassis) for ~1800$ here in Hungary. 5500$ is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much, we had fully working, reasonable condition S5 turbo convertibles in the 7000-9000 range. Honestly, if the engine turns out to be okay I'd maybe pay 2000, otherwise 1000-1500 tops.
That said, it would be nice if someone saved it. Also, I lowkey want to acquire the spoiler off it
in the USA that would be a Sport model, its got the 5 lug wheels, and big brakes. also the little spoiler on the back.
however in Europe, i think that is the only model you got for 86-88. it came with a different engine, still 6 port 13B, but its got a distributor and thermal reactor instead of a cat.
the only thing that is bad about that car is that the sunroof is aftermarket.
We definitely got the S4 Turbo too, that one has the same electronic ignition setup as in the US. EU cars also have a side mirror that folds back. Still, I'm no expert considering mine is from the US
Unless you are going to do a complete teardown and rebuild, I would say no. . .. .5,000 USD is what a running beater is worth in CA.. . . .And it runs.
The electrical harness after all these years could be problematic. . . . .And the engine probably needs to be rebuilt.
These cars are rare now, but you don't need a money pit either. Access to parts now is getting difficult.
Let's say you do a complete teardown, you might be in a situation where you spend more than you can sell it for when you are done.
Alright, thank you all guys, I think I'm going to pass on it. However I fell in love with FCs since I started learning about them more so I will be looking for a different one. If it even shows up somewhere near in Europe.
EDIT: I will still go there to see if the engine is running, and maybe if he goes low enough on the price i will see but i would like to have turbo 2 more anyways so i will see.
If you are willing to travel there are definitely nice FCs scattered around Europe, but if you are more adventurous the market is much bigger over on the other side of the pond. If by chance you want one from Hungary (not seeing any working ones at the moment) there are some who could help you out with compression testing etc.
