Fast NA FC but trannys out????

I just finished fixing the timing and it made a HUGE difference as far as power. The FC has NEVER pulled like this before so I was sure everything was running perfect. I was gonna come home and brag about that thinking the fluid also fixed my tranny problems a bit. So I pull into my street and the shifters not engaging. So I get it into 2nd and start driving up my street. I go into 2nd again (I had upshifted to third up the hill) and when I try to get it in, its not going in. None of the gears will engage. The shifter wont go into the slot. Whats wrong with my tranny??? I just changed the fluid but nothings engaging.

that has happened to a few ppl after a long drive where it wont go back into a gear.... just leave the caar for a bit and come back in a few hours... give it a chance to cool down and the fluid set...

Why does it do that? is this normal or part of a failing transmissions problems? I just went back and it engaged and I moved it back to my house but it sounds like everythings really dry or something. I dont know. My tranny doesnt make a grinding noise all the time, just when I push the clutch in, and move it into a gear while the clutch is still in, it'll make it. BUt if i let off the pedal while its in neutral it'll stop. Thanks for the tip.

Also if my tranny is gone (and im sure it will be very soon) what kind of tranny should I go to for better reliability? Right now I have a 87 GXL.

****, I feel bad now. I went over there to resolve this problem, and the guy was really timid. Like he was stuttering and seemed really nervous. Then to top it all off I find out his sister was in a car accident in Nov. and has been in a coma since and he was just getting back from seeing her. I feel like an *** now. He even tried to give me advice, telling me I should adjust the timing (haha even he knew) or Id mess up the crankshaft Poor guy. well I can make it up by being more friendly in the future. The pedals not loose I think. I dont know it was pretty much what bcty described it as. I had just gotten back from like a 40 minute drive.

Yea I took it for another test run right now. I moved the car about 5 ft and then put it in neutral for like 3 mins. When I tried getting in gear again it would engage until I turned it off and then did it.

Checking the Haynes manual, besides mentioning bad trans. it also shows it could be from faulty pressure plate, fork and bearing not working properly or pressure plate to flywheel bolts loose.

So the car engages with the car turned off? Sounds to me like the clutch isn't disengaging, from bad hydraulics... You should be able to drive by shifting without the clutch if this is the case.
This is a very common problem.
You can check this by having a friend pump the clutch while you watch the slave cylinder/feel the slave cylinder for full engagement.

Other possibilities, in order of likelihood:
Bent release fork
Misdjusted clutch pedal
loose pressure plate bolts.
Bad transmission.

But I would bet it is the hydraulics.... Bleed them first; if not fixed, then replace the salve cylinder; if not fixed, then replace the master cylinder; if not fixed, then replace the clutch hose.

Thanks sean. Well to be more specific its like this. While the cars on, the slots are harder and harder to get into until its impossible too. If i turn the car off I can engage a gear but after like 4 minutes I cant again. Do you think its still due to the hydraulics?

BTW the previous owner I guess installed a shitty short shifter and some new bushings, could that be contributing to the problem?
