Failed ca smog ><

HC max:141
HC meas: 154

T.T everything else was around the average output. Sooo the chart says converter, tune-up? Im kinda strapped on cash though =/ umm i dont know but a line from the charcoal canister was not connected so failed the visual but i was wondering if that would pass it within that 13 point difference?

first off, get that cannister connected.

HC= Hydrocarbons= unburnt fuel.

i'll keep it simple, three things you can do.

replace Oxygen sensor, make sure your air pump is working and injecting air properly into a working cat. and/or replace cat. check fuel filter too.

you can also lean out the air/fuel ratio, just find out the proper way to do it before you go ahead and take this option.

this should help since you are close to passing

how old is your cat? if everything else is within range it just sounds like you need a new cat with the high HC count

it depends on the tech doing your smog but main cat should make you pass if that's all you're worried about it.

All the cats matter, not just the main cat. But if you don't feel like dropping hundreds of dollars on direct replacements, just swap the main. If you know someone who can weld, or know a decent exhaust shop, then get an oversize main cat for testing purposes only. I use a big GM converter meant for a V8 truck, with no precats. Once the test is done, out it goes, and I put back the presilencer.

Other small things to check/replace:
spark plugs
port air and split air solenoids (on the ACV itself)

Yeah you pass the visual part of the test with that bonez cat. but i belive that your cat is in good cond due to the fact that you hc # was extremely past means you just got to do a good tune up. And the only cat that matters is your main cat the one that has air injection going to it (mid bed air). it's up to the discretion of the smog tech if he want to fail the visual test or not, most of these guys do not know what there looking at(rx-7 rotary engines). all they teach these guys is how to smog cars and check to see if all the emissions devises are in the car according to a motor age book or chilton manual. if you have any question on smog related topics pm me il be happy to helpl you out. california only.
