factory amp?

which system??? Year??? Model???
There are about a half dozen different audio systems from the factory.
Factory amps depend entirely on what year, model and system.
Systems with door speakers above the arm rest have an amp behind the drivers dash speaker.
Systems with head rest speakers, have an amp in the drivers lower B pillar area.
Systems with high power front speakers have an amp built into the passengers front speaker enclosure that powers both from speakers.
Systems with CD's have an amp located in the enclosure for each rear speaker.
Systems with EQ's but don't have CD's have an amp bolted to the bottom of the factory head unit for the rear speakers.

I've been trying to figure this out as well for a while. I doubt my '88 vert has the factory amp in it considering how little interior it had when i bought the car. Where is the lower B pillar?

If you have cloth seats/interior, then you wouldn't have head rest speakers or the head rest speaker amp.
So again, need to know what car you have.

Well my '88 vert has cloth seats but leather headrest speakers. No door speakers although when I replaced the window regulators I did notice speaker wire going into the doors. It wouldnt suprise me to find out that I have seats and door panels from a different car. If you need more info let me know.

You probably have a standard 88 vert (non P Package).
There won't be a headrest amp unless someone added it, and then will be in the drivers lower B pillar area. You might be able to get too it through removing the tire cover and reaching in. But you should have the door woofer amp behind the drivers dash speaker unless the same guy that swapped in the headrests, removed it.
