OBEY YOUR MAZDA
check your water thermo sensor, its located on the water pump housing underneath the alternator, the FSM has a well explained section about it. I dont remember wher it is. Get new vaccum hoses and ste tps, it worked wonders on my 86 gxl

Also make sure that your plugs are good. I had a similar situation, glowing cats and no power and it turned out the plugs were shot. So the gas burned in the cats instead of the engine.

...94% correct.
have any of you looked under your cars after driving??? At night??? The exhaust manifold and pre cat glows no matter what! It's a normal thing. The exhaust temps of an RX7 are ridiculously high.
As far as the afterburn and loss of power you might want to try the de-flooding proceedure. Several times while driving my '87 NA I had similar problems and it turned out that I was running way too rich (too much gas...I think that's rich) and it would flood out on me from time to time.

Yeah, ear test can fail pretty bad, it may sound strong, but once it gets resistance it'll blow by the seals. Id do a real comp test on it, i bet its blown, sorry to say it.
