Exhaust manifold shield

Am I going to melt things if I take this out? Or maybe the engine bay will get too hot?

Anyway, it's rusted off its mounts and it RATTLES at 1700-1800 RPM.

I don't know how easy it is to remove/install as I haven't gotten under the car to look at it. Think I should pick up a new one?

Mine has some of the heat shields removed, and the floor gets hot enough to burn you. Even though I have no interior down there, I still reccomend that you fix/replace it.

They are a PIA to get off, at least on a turbo. That is why it took us 3 hrs to get my turbo off the first time. I am currently running without one, but Ben's floor is so hot cuz I think the downpipe heat shealds have been removed, not so much the turbo/manifold. It'll prolly help intake temps a bit too, since the exhaust heat will be radiating right into the intake mani.

The exhaust one at the engine is needed to keep things cooler on the intake manifold. Otherwise you will hot soak the intake and loose power.

oops, I thought he said DP shield. In any case, heat shields are usually there for a reason.

Mine is removed.. it rusted off..

I'm in the process or making a new one (custom - because of the fact that theres no cheap ones without rust.. might as well make one)

It's basically as Icemark said - heat soak issue. Nothing of mine has melted, But I'm sure I'm losing some power because of it's absence.

Mine was also rusted off. I had a really hard time getting it out when I pulled the turbo. It ended up coming out in three pieces.

Haven't given much thought to what I will do when I put the turbo back in the car. My downpipe is Jet-Hot coated but I'd still like to keep the exhaust manifold heat shield. Is there any company that sells them, or is fabrication required? Either way, I will definitely put one on when I put the turbo back in the car.

It is not only heat soak on the intake manifold.Look at the engine harness wiring route.

Is the heat shield supposed to be in one piece or two, because when I had it on a lift I removed the lower half of the heat shield.

I currently have no heat shield, but that is also because I have a header. When I put my new engine in, I think I am going to wrap the header, to keep engine bay temps down.

Mine rattled too. To fix it, I drilled a small hole in the top edge of the shield, put in a spring that reaches down to the motor mount, and attached it to a 3" piece of metal rod that bridges across the gap in the motor mount. The spring pulls down on the shield, stopping the rattle. I tried the oversize washers on the mounting bolts too, but this works better, and you can't really see it unless you look pretty hard. I also riveted the top and bottom halves together near the exhaust end.
