"ideal" is very motor dependant and I can't even begin to explain why one is ideal over the other.
As a general rule, Single Exhaust = less weight and loud, Duel Exhaust = More weight and quiter.

Racing beat makes a good exhaust in both road race (true dual) and street form (collected from engine to a y pipe)

Well, Im sure it will be disputed, but i've read and talked a lot and i have come up with this.

1.Racing Beat Header (good low-end +)

2.High flow cat (if emissions are a concern)

3.The debate between single and duals is disputable. If performance is your focus ,then i think single would flow better and would weigh less, however it would be louder. If you ask me the dual exhaust looks a ton better considering the dimple in the bumper specifically made for it.

4. There are several cat backs available. I prefer Borla, but thats because I wanted it to be as quiet as possible while freeing every thing up.

5. 2.5 or 2.25 inchs seems to be the most common.

also, i have assumed its an NA ..If not then my advice should be discarded

Another important factor to remember when looking at upgraded exhaust systems is the provision for allowing the 6 port actuators to work properly. These actuators open up the auxiliary intake ports at higher RPMs for a broad powerband. Since the 86-88 models utilize exhaust backpressure to open the ports, they place a sensing tube at the point of highest exhaust pulse intensity to allow the ports to work properly.

Yeah that exhaust kicks the **** out of the borla as far as looks goes. Seriously nice looking exhaust Mazdapunk87, I especially like the angle at which the mufflers sit. Im sorry S5 guys but I will always prefer the black trim and spoilers of the S4's. Just not the tail lights.

Search the forums, question been debated before. For me the ideal is gonna be stock piping with Bonez cat and RB mufflers. Beyond that you don't gain much. And it says right on the web site that you need the RB carbeurator if you want significant gains from the RB header (compared to eliminating the cat with stock manifold, downpipe and presilencer). So don't start with me. It's a nice header, but the real spots are the cat and mufflers. The stock manifold is lousy b/c you don't need much; not b/c they didn't know how to bend a pipe in 1986.

So cat and mufflers to start, and if you really want to squeeze out every last tiny bit of power then true duals, headers and slightly larger pipe.

man, screw buying one
you could have a very nice one made for you, for less than a high quality aftermarket exhaust. and like that, it can be made to your every desire.
