I'm not sure what your asking exactly, but in order to lock your doors from the inside when you get out, you need to hold the door handle out as if you where opening them. But, you should be able to lock the doors, from the outside, when the door is closed. If not, something is broken or a linkage came off.

thats how it is for my Fc, a 86 base. I should have taken some pictures( to late now), but when I got the car, both handles where broken off. When you put new handles in, you need to adjust a linkage from the handle to the piece that latches the door in place. If I remember correctly, if the linkage is adjusted to far one way or the other the locking mechanism of the handle binds, and it won't lock. Maybe thats why?

That is the way it is supposed to work.

Unless you hold the exterior handle up, while closing the door, they unlock to prevent you from accidentally locking your keys in the car.

thats the thing i dont hold the exterior handle up while closing. i lock the doors and shut them check to see if they locked and it opens the only way they stayed locked is when its lock from inside when door is closed

Yes, that is correct. What didn't you understand?

If you lock the door from the inside or with the key while the door is open, then when you close the door it should automatically unlock unless you are holding the external handle up when closing.

Again to prevent you from accidentally locking your keys in the car.

It is supposed to unlock if you don't hold the exterior handle up when closing the door.

Then the rod from the key cyl is disconnected on your case.

Huh? I never knew that! I thought that my door handles were busted because of this. I was also thinking about replacing the locks since I thought they were broken but decided it wasn't such a big deal anyway? Go figure. You learn something new everyday! Ha

Similar thing happened to me. But in my case no matter how I locked it, there was no way to unlock it. It wasn't the rod in my case, it was the door lock mechanism that the rods connect to. So if your rods are still attached you need to replace that thing. Cheapest way is junk yard.

Either way, taking apart the door is easy. The one hard part is the manual crank if you have one. For that you need to squeeze the horshoe clip through the thin gap between the handle and the door. Don't force the crank off or you'll break it.
