I would have to agree with some of the guys on here. Doing just a basic build that will not do more than 170-180 mph is usually around 10k dollars and only increases in cost exponentially as your target speed increases. Given the rules that you are likely gong to be subject to at the salt flats I don't think you are going to be driving anywhere with this car much less across the United States. You are probably talking about a car you do not want to put 2-3k miles on by using it on the street going to the flats that alone would probably run you around 1k USD in fuel/fluids costs. Plus the 6 pt, racing tub, and cage that is likely requisite will be prohibitive of stop and go type stuff and won't pumping gas be so fun having to unbuckle your 6pt take off your steering wheel and wiggle out of your car?

If you have the funding i'll buy you a beer when you hit 200mph in congratulations but think on it as a monumental task not just something every joe schmoe can do in their garage with 4-5k and a busted old FC.

Well... if you're a typical FC owner, I'm assuming money isn't freewheeling so let's talk about SPONSORSHIP!

i agree on the salt vs asphalt thing, i think that would be a major hurdle right there. I think it would be similar to driving in the rain at interstate speeds, very unstable.

well how much space does it take to get up to 200mph? maybe a local unused airstrip would work? and it would be asphalt so you wouldnt have to worry about traction as much. you would need at least 2 miles of track, and at least 500whp. there are a few videos on youtube of attempts, including a 600hp lamborghini that couldnt break 190mph!

guys guys guys.

i have plenty of money thrown into my car 10k + already so thats not a problem.

air strip eh? thats 100% doable on an airstrip. How would one go about coaxing an airstrip to let me do a stupid stunt like this?

Well, the thing about salt is rolling resistance. if you look at the tires, that are thin, and probably completely solid. An old hyper mileing trick.

would someone care to do any sort of calculations so i know where i stand on this? i know we have drag coefficients somewheres and and 3d models people have made that can be put in a simulated wind tunnel.

For moral support, go rent The World's Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins.

One (totally unprepared) man's quest to set a record at Bonneville.

I think to help us calculate where you are at right now you should give us a rundown of your car's modifications and preparations. Then the more skilled people on the forum will be able to help you out.

If you really wanna go 200, go buy yourself a Kawasaki Zx-14R. Couple of small supporting mods, and bobs your uncle. The instant ability to hurl yourself threw the air at double triple digit speeds. TADA!

first thing I would do is get a copy of the rule book, your quest may end once you read it.

I'm not sure if this is the 'official' site but it says they will have rule books available soon for sale so when they get them in pick one up and start inspecting your car for what it will need and built a parts list and a fabrication list.

200mph is NOT going to be that hard in an FC.

Yes, in 1985 Racing Beat did 238mph in a STOCK body class with only ~500hp Bridgeport.

It is going to be a little harder than slapping on a hybrid turbo, a TII transmission and 3:90 gearing, but I think it could be done with $15-20,000 no problem.

You say you have 10k in your car already, but I think the mandatory tires, safety and fire supression equipment alone sets you back quite a bit, especially for something that you will only really use that one time.

Again- start out with the rule book, then if you have a good budget in mind it might be worth a phone call or email to racing beat.

some motivation. also asphalt based.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUyf3g5AkI0

I would think the first thing to do is join a bonneville/high speed forum and absorb as much info from the experienced first.

safety is first always. A full cage/bracing plus fire suppression system will keep you alive to try again.

Aero will be key in keeping you straight and alive though. The whole under tray needs to be rebuilt to be as flat as possible. You don't want turbulence under there.

As a replacement for a rear spoiler. A rear under tray like the Amemiya one may help with downforce and sucking air out from under the car. Maybe even make a divided air tunnel under the car to help keep it straight(although a gust of wind could cause unforeseen movement).

good luck. I think this would be totally cool to try.

Precisely. There's more to Bonneville than just power and speed and gear ratio's.

The salt flat is going to tear you apart. Slicks, full cage, safety harness, fire suit, FUEL CELL, etc. is going to cost you around 10k alone.

How experienced are you in racing? Any amazing records in the 1/4 mile? If you can't even make a decent pass in the 1/4 mile with a good car, don't expect much at Bonneville. I know it's mainly about amateur racing and a possible personal goal, but what is the point of going for 200mph when it's already been done with a rotary engine? Might as well go for 300mph or not try at all.

thanks for the kind words. I have taken all of this into account. dont you worry about this stuff to much. If i die, then its going to be under my terms. in a ball of fire and spinning rotors. LOLS.

anyways i picked this goal because everyone seems to be doing the same damn thing year in and year out. whats the point if its been done by every average idiot? Drag racing is one niche, drifting is another, and road racing is as well another. its all different and there are tons of people who do all of these. But how many people can say they built a car that went 200 MPH?
