Question Engine shuts off after 3+ hours of spirited driving.

So I was driving around from about 8 to roughly 12 or 1 last night doing some spirited driving on my 7 to work all the old fluids out of the system that the PO had in it.

I was going down a straight road in my area cruising probably about 50 in 4th when the engine just sputtered and died. I tried clutch kicking it to get it started while it was rolling but no go.

So I pulled it off into a parking lot a little up the road, went inside to a local dennys and had a late dinner, came out, and the car started just fine. Fired right up first time cranking.

I'm thinking maybe OH'ing from the extended spirited driving? Just wanted to get some better opinions.

Another small issue. When driving around, When I go to shift down into 2nd, it will grind if I shift too hard. Also, Sometimes, I can... "pull the stick closer to me" so to say. I know where the standard spot is that 2nd gear is suppose to catch and the spot that the stick goes to sometimes is NOWHERE near there. It almost pops the shift boot surround off because its against the side of the surround. It only does this periodically. Most of the time I can shift it to the right spot, others it will drop all the way down. But it still goes into gear and drives just fine, no grinding or anything.

Any ideas on that?

All answers greatly thanked.

Btw, car is a 1989 GTUs with a auto to manual swap. The motor is a S5 from another GTUs with 30k on a atkins rebuild. (so im told)

check to make sure that the AFM is firmly seated in the clamp and tight. On my old 88 GTU I was in a hurry to put the intake back on one time and I didn't have the AFM secure. It would randomly cut the motor off until I fixed it.

Just a note. The car is a carbed setup. The ECU has been removed.

The carb is a little dirty. I was thinking about pulling it off today and giving it a really good cleaning.

You don't have to "think" about whether your car is running hot- your water temp gauge will tell you.

Sounds more like a fuel delivery problem to me.

Thats the thing. I was keeping a close eye on the temp gauge and it never went up past half way.

And if it was a fuel delivery issue, it doesnt really make sense that the car started back up just fine and after I babied it around for 20 or so minutes, it was perfectly fine again.

How full was the fuel tank?
Could be the fuel sock sucked up some crap and stopping the car- thus releasing the suction- cleared up the problem...at least temporarily.

Good point. The car had been sitting for about 2 months before I bought it. It was nearly empty when I got it. I put 40$ in. Drove it to my work. It sat there for about 3 hours. Then I basically drove around nonstop after that.

All of this happened after I'd put about 40$ of gas in the car and was down to about 1/4th tank again.

OK! I just read through the FAQ and it seems like my fuel sock is dirty. Because the engine power kinda stutters going around corners. I'll pull my sock off when I get off work and see if its dirty or not.

I guess. The vin shows as a GTUs but the guy I bought the car from had changed ALOT of stuff on the car. The cluster is for a auto so I just figured it use to be a auto...

Anyone have any help with the tranny issue? It's doing it in 1st now also.
