Engine Shudder?

When in neutral and I rev up and let it drop back down to idle, its as if the engine was.... "shuddering" at about 1500 rpms while on its way back down to idle.

Is this normal? If not, what could be the problem?
I just changed the spark plugs today - so those are good

I have an '87 TII with no mods

Btw, when idleing, the engine appears to shake quite a bit - is anything wrong?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Jonathan

I believe that's the job of the dashpot. It will stop the revs from dropping too fast and too low so the engine doesn't stall.

I agree with 91_FC...........an engine brace would probably solve the problem.

You can find one from RB at the following link
Racing Beat Engine Brace (86-92)

It's easy to install also. Here is a link to the how-to instructions

I have a similar problem but I have Banzai Racing motor mounts with my recent rebuild. I had the same thing happen before the rebuild. Could this be solely a dashpot problem or something else? Would an engine brace work?

if the mounts go bad, the engine brace will help a little, but it will not cure the problem. fix the mounts first, and plus the brace is the best solution.

I would look at the motor mounts and I would put $5 down that if you change them, your problem will go away.

Appears that the consensus is that the motor mounts are bad - well - can't argue with that

How hard is it to change the motor mounts?

Mazdatrix has the stock ones and they are pretty cheap.. like 35 bucks each

Banzai racing has adjustable eurethane ones for about 130?? a pair. I Have them, but haven't got the engine back in the car yet, I'm curious has to how much vibration is transferred with them.

I have the Banzai Racing mounts. They're still on the maximum setting so the car vibrates around 1600-2000 rpm. It doesn't really bother me as I've gotten used to it but I'm sure it can be adjusted so the vibration is minimal/nonexistant.
