Engine rpm races-then flutuates

87 RX Turbo OEM
What thermo control/where do you start T/sing? At cold start up engine RPM sometimes hits 4K+ then settles down to 1.5K after about 10 sec's. When operating Temp is reached-and mostly when driving, I.e coming to stop, the RPM flutuates 800 RPM to stall. The injectors haven't been changed on it (93K miles) or any other electrical (Exc. alternator)/fuel system component.
Also noticed (probably not related) that when brakes pressed, interior/exterior lights dim, and when a switch is activated (window/sunroof, etc) a popping noise is heard through radio speaker when the switch is first pressed.

Any ideas where to begin?

Thanks!

well it's normal for it to rev up high when you first turn it on. My old S4 would fluctuate while it warmed up but after it reached Operating temps it was not an issue.

As far as your car wanting to stall after it's been warmed up it could be a bunch of things.

Let's start with the things you've already checked:

what have you done so far?

well the first things that pop into my head are:

TPS might be slightly off

vaccumm leak ( hoses, TID)

bad plugs

fuel system

but i need to know what this guy has checked so we can narrow it down a tad more.

MORE details and less abbreviations would be greatly appreciated too.

Your increased idle on startup is normal. I had the stereo popping problem myself when my battery was low, maybe check your battery and charging system. The fluctuating and stalling could be related to the electrical problem, but it could also be something else, like vacuum leaks or TPS issues. I'd refer to the FSM troubleshooting guide and idle troubleshooting guide for that.

Got a bunch of links for your convenience:

The coolest part is they were posted by helpful members of the community. I think there are 21 contributing members now and 80+ how-tos. Pretty neat. I encourage anyone with good, reliable info to improve guides that need help, and to write their own articles if they're helpful. You get credit for doing so too.

I haven't done anything innovative or NEW ( i haven't seen your wholes site yet) so I most likely won't ADD to it but who knows.

Ha! Wish I could read Japanese. Even if all you have is technical data or maintenance info, the site's ready and willing to accept, it doesn't have to be innovative or new. My5ABaby has some awesome info in his Body Information/Dimensions article, for instance. The Community Service Manual is full of info like that.

I know this is an increadably old thread. but Bernie is my dad and handed the Rx7 down to me after many years of bugging him. He lost his fight to cancer last week and I just wanted to say RIP and he will be missed. Our many phone calls back and forth about the car has help me many times. He was deffinatley a huge fan of rotaries.
