Exclamation Engine problems with 1988 RX-7 Turbo

Hi,

I'm new to the RX-7 and I'm not really sure what I'm doing with the rotary engine. I have a question of what might be going on with my car. I bought the car, and the guy told me it had some problems. What is going on is when I start the car, is starts fine, and idles. When I apply any acceleration at all, the car will foul out, and shut off. I'm not sure what to do about it, because I haven't even gotten to drive the car yet, and it is driving me insane. If anybody would be able to help me out on this one, I'd appriciate it. Either leave me a message, or e-mail me please. Thanks alot.

Josh

Car is a 1988 RX-7 2nd Gen. Turbo. 5-speed man., it has 111,000 miles on the engine.

wouldnt be a bad idea to change your fuel filter

i dont really have any idea, but that can keep the car from having enough fuel at higher rpms

Welcome. I get to be the first to tell you to do a compression check. Do this very cheap and easy test before you spend any money on parts.

to tell you the truth it seem slike you have 1 of two problems, either a low spark or theres a problem with the fuel.
A low spark could come form bad cabels, ground, spark plugs, ECU going bad, and some others. check that first.
Fuel problems could be your fuel pressure regulator, crap cloging your lines, etc (this is less likely than the spark problem)
Think of it it idles Ok, so that mean that your spark, air, and fuel is good at that point. and when you give it throttle, it dies, possibly cause the injectors are shooting gas into the chamber and the spark isnt large enough to fuly combust it so its shutting off.
are you running really rich? this is the fuel problem, your injectors could possibly be shooting too much fuel in and this again makes for a bad combustion.

A third problem could be the MAF sensor, going bad telling your computer that your not getting enough air in the chambers...

hopefully one of those will do it.

but first off,
1) do a compression test, (you can search how to preform this, its relatively easy)
2) If you have good compression (should spike at 100 - 120psi) then do a GOOD tune up Wires, plugs, etc...
3) if you do that and still nothing check the above "spark" problems and if tht doesnt work... well damn... take it to a shop haha

thats my 2 cents for you buddy

do all of what was recmmended above and also check the AFM (Air Flow Meter) to see if it's stuck. if the flapper doesn't swing then that would choke off all air except for the proper amount at idle. the AFM is located just behind the air filter. passenger side in front of the front wheel well under the hood. you will need to either take out the air filter and reach in the hole to feel for the flapper door, or take the intake off and pull the AFM to inspect it. the door should swing freely with a little force back from it's return spring.

do yourself a favor and buy a haynes or other shop manual and use the links in the FAQ section about the online FSM (factory Service Manual) link -> http://www.teamfc3s.org/main/factory...ual/1986_1988/

welcome to the forum,

jana,
Ryosuke
