engine load and auto tranny questions

hey i have a automatic s5 vert (90) and had a few questions.... chris has fixed up my car alot and it has a rock solid idle at 1k rpms or a bit lower, the tps was brand new that i replaced a year or so ago, he just put a new starter on the car, did some engine grounding for me and cleaned my BAC, removed the rats nest all all emissions, and unstuck my ports....

now when i put the car into gear it sometimes stalls off or the idle drops extremely low... this is about 90% of the time.... hes not sure because hes not familiar with auto trannys as much as manuals.... he said maybe a torque converter going bad but is not sure... i also know my alt might not be working the best but soon as i get some money a fd alt is going in... and the BAC is the other thing he is saying it might be.... he said this because when we first got the car running it ran wonderful... didnt drop the idle when you changed gears or anything but this was a test run without the a/c and p/s belts on... now that we put the belts on it does this more often...

any ideas... help with auto tranny knowledge? thanks in advance

simple, adjust the idle with the car in drive, not park.

the idle in drive is fine.... the car just almost stalls off right when the load is put on the motor... then goes back up to its 1k idle.... its like it takes way to long for the BAC to compensate the load change when putting it in gear... make sense

Different car, but my '90 VW Jetta did the same thing- turned out to be the MAF. Check your AFM, just a thought.

Also changing the Auto Tranny Fluid may help a bit - I did this around the same time. Couldn't hurt.

Again, this was for a completely different car - just some suggestions.

Bad torque converter would be like a bad clutch

Similar function, similar symptoms.

It's quite common for it to dip, just simply a result of the initial load before the ECU can catch up. It shouldn't, however drop below 500 or stall. What happens if you turn on all of your goodies (a/c, radio, fan on high, lights) and turn the wheel side to side, does it attempt to stall or do the same thing?

There's still no good reason not to ditch that slushbox...

ok im making this post so that people that search can actually see the outcome of a thread..... i got help from sonicrat and what it was was the car was holding an idle in park with my BAC working at 100% really.... so i warmed up the car, jumpered the initial coupler, disconnected the bac valve, started the car and moved the throttle stop screw, set this to a 900 rpm idle where its solid... then put the car back to normal.... the car runs GREAT with all my electical loads on and the idle doesnt almost stall out when going into gear....

thanks sonicrat!
