Engine Gurus Needed

Yesterday I was driving my 87TII and I went WOT to pass a car and I could hear a loud screaching noise at about 7000 so I let off and took my exit about 1/2 mile down the road. The noise was momentary and only lasted for a second. When I got to the light, the car died and it took me for ever to start it. Once started, it would not idle on it's own. I had to hold it at 1200rpm or it would die. Oil pressure good, no smoke at all, temp good, no water in oil, but the engine shakes like a ****. Mechanic friend says it's a bearing. What do you guys think or has anyone else had this problem. I am planning a rebuild this weekend.

You already guessed - a compression test will tell for sure.

You dont need an engine guru, you need an engine rebuilder.

Do a compression check like Sure Shot said, but the result is pretty much a foregone conclusion.

Your engine must have blown.

If your friend is right about bearings than remove the oil filter and if you see copper flakes than its a bearing if not the bearings that went.

had the same problems bro. happened exactly how you said. revved it to 7000, heard some noise, then the engine just shut off. took a few minutes 2 get started. was able 2 drive home but no more 30mph, made a grinding noise the whole way.

= blown engine, lost the no.1 rotor

sorry.

I pulled the engine last night. I have it down to bare block. My buddy is going to bring his tools today to take off the flywheel and finish taking everything apart. The engine turns very free with no binding and puts out a heavy woosh of air out of the exhaust ports, so I wont know till we open it. When I pulled the primary injector plugs, there was gas inside the plug holes. No fuel lines were removed yet so there is no way it could splash inside. I dont know, they may be bad also.

Come on everyone don't get his hopes up lol, Doesn't sound good at all, but how it drive afterwards? you said it wouldn't idle but did it still have power? Check your vac lines too, i don't think they would just fall off but it happened to me in my truck once and it wouldn't idle either

It drove fine and still pulled and boosted fine, but it would not idle for ****. I know it still had plenty of power because I was so f**kin pissed from sitting out in the sun at an off ramp red light, that when I got it started I burnt through first and redlined every gear. At that point if I blew it out of the frikin hood I would give two *****. So we will see tonight. I will have pics this evening once I bust it open. It's as exciting as bustin open a ***** Wonka chocalate bar.

Perhaps you blew open a vac leak? If it still pulls fine/runs fine, it's hard to imagine you lost an apex. But do a compression check first, then look for the normal culprits (vac leak, etc)

Ladies and gentlemen, the services for our dearly beloved will be held Friday the ninth day of April in the year 2004 at St. Michaels Cathedral. Following the services, there will be heavy drinking and a rebuild. Welp as you can see, the housing are gone, along with all apex seals and oil seals. Lucky me my buddy has 2 good housings and my mech is porting everything today. I guess I'll be overnighting seals today for the weekend. Will have pics of final product. Thank you all for your support.
