Engine flooded :( How to get it running again?

Quick question - I'm almost certain the engine flooded on my 88 NA Rx7. I started it just to move it off the street and 2 days later it wont start. Its cranking and I can smell fuel....

Anyway, is pulling the plugs and letting everything dry out sufficient? Or is there more to it?

Unflooding severely flooded rotary engine, coles notes version:

1. Pull EGI fuses under hood.
2. Pull leading plugs out. Place rag near holes to catch fuel spray.
3. Crank engine 15 sec.
4. Pour teaspoon of engine oil in each chamber front and rear. This will restore compression lost because of oil being washed away.
5. Replace spark plugs and fuses.
6. Crank engine.

For much more detailed versions, see archives or FAQ or search.

You only need to pull one.

2. Pull leading plugs out.
In many cases you can clear flooding without removing the plugs. I wouldn't reach for any tools until I'd had several unsuccessful attempts at simply cutting the fuel and cranking with the throttle wide open. You forgot the throttle bit too. That's the most important step.

3. Crank engine 15 sec.
Never operate the starter for more than 10 seconds at a time with at least that long to cool down in between attempts.

when you say chamber, do you mean the holes the spark plugs go in?

Push the car down a hill, jump in, push the clutch in, shift into 2nd then re-engage the clutch..... Or use the nifty search function on the forums.

I've never had to do more than pull the EGI fuse. Crank. Put it back in and then start it.

Now i just turn the fuel pump off.

NZ, notice I said "severely flooded" at the top, in which case you need oil to restore compression.

I said to pull both EGI fuses out, because if in doubt, both out will do the job.

Yes, I forgot about the holding the throttle open part - I only remember when actually doing the procedure.

And yes, holding the starter 5-10 sec. is enough, pausing in between to let it cool down.

Thanks for keeping an eye out. It just goes to show that searching is worthwile.

Idrinkalot - yes, oil into the chambers via spark plug holes.
