Engine Fire... crap

So, after reading many stories about people keeping fire extinguishers on board, and thinking I will never need one. Definitely buying one this week.

Friday night, I was running my car pretty hard. I didn't overheat or anything, but all of a sudden sparks starting shooting out behind my car. ****! I pulled over instantly, and there was a small fire coming from between the firewall and the engine, just behind the intercooler. I haven't had a chance to take a good look at it yet, so I don't know exactly what it was that lit on fire. Luckily I had a big bottle of water in the car and was able to put it out. I let the car sit on the side of the road until the morning, at which time I went, started it and drove it home, without incident.

Any idea what could have happened?

Probably the pulsation dampener, or it might have been some wiring housing... but more likely it's the pulsation dampener.

Would the car still run fine if the fire only lasted a short time and was not very big? Because mine does...

I roughly translated it as "check the pulsation dampener or next time you won't be able to tell this story"? close?
