Question electrical power issue...NEED A GURU

Hey,

pretty much deduced that engine I blew 1.5 mon. ago went due to predetonation. So, as part of the engine replacement (atkins reman) I figured I would replace the alternator as well (mazda reman from ebay for 54 bucks). Heres the boat I am in now. At idle my "power devivery" is still so bad that when I have the car idleing and I have the radio on. When I roll up the widows It cuts out the radio, or, if I close the moonroof. same thing. If at idle I do both, I can watch the tach drop like 2-250 rpms. I installed a boost gauge and am wiring up a 3 wire AFR tommarrro night as well. You guys have any ideas on where to look for the power problem. I only had the car 6 days before the engine blew so I really cannot tell you anything abou tht e history but I can l you that the last owner told me "The car eats batteries (3 within the last 10 years)". ANY ideas

MODS:
K&N drop in
RB full turbo back
walbro rewire tommarro (stock injectors)
silicone and crap like that too...

thanks guys

sorry so long
Jared
BTW.. tonight I hooked a voltmeter to the battery an at idle with lights on I was at 16.6x. if that helps.

thx

Run some 2 gauge battery ground. Run a cable directly from the screw end + terminal from the alternator to the battery (+).

To me it sounds like your car is not getting the power it needs from the battery. I would also consider re-soldering all cold-solder points.

Good Luck

Poor connections, Run new battery cables from the battery to starter, and battery to block, and battery to chassis. I had the same exact problems...poor connections. New cables with terminals shouldnt cost you more than 15 bucks. BE sure everythign is bare metal, and **clean**. Run a new wire from teh alternator to battery/starter also. BE sure the alternator's ground is tight as well.

Yep, good grounds from battery (-) and from the engine to chassis are essential. Then take care of the battery (+) to starter and you should be OK

Make sure: That the ground from the top of the transmission to the SPADE LUG on the firewall is installed and clean. This small wire will cause more grief than you can imagine.

My 91 had 5 ground straps on the stock exhaust alone. Once you change the exhaust, the other grounds become even more important..

hmm..my car is having electrical problems as well. At idle during the day with notihng on except radio..it gets a good reading at 14amps. but at night with the lights on at idle it reads just over 12 and driving maybe around 13 or so. any suggestions? the trans was just pulled about 1-2 months ago to change through out bearing if that may help with the solution.

Also the exhaust has to come off to pull the transmission, so it's grounds may all be off.
