Exclamation electrical issue

yesterday i noticed my tail lights/ brake lights stopped working, i changed the "stop" fuse cause i thought that might be the right one but im not sure i was right on that theory cause it didnt fix it, my headlights/side markers/ turn signals alll work fine, its just the tail lights running when i turn on my headlights, and turning on when i brake.. they dont work when i hit the hazards either. im gonna buy new bulbs when i get off of work tonight to test that out too but just incase thats not the issue either i wanna know some other things i can try. saw a lot of threads similar but none tail light specific so i posted..

as a side note: i dont know how to read wiring diagrams or schematics aka im not a electrical genius so if you think i need to do something involving wires try and break it down to the most retarded form of speech you possibly can :\

Look under the dash and find the plugs attached to the pedal. There should be a black plug which has a green with white stripe(g/w) wire and a white with green stripe(w/g) wire. Disconnect this plug and take a "jumper" wire and jumper these two wires. When jumpered the brake lights ought to light up. If not then there is likely a problem within the cpu or wiring back to the lights themselves.

thanks, ill check it out today and see what happens. are the g/w & w/g wires connected to each other or are they connected to different wires?

They are different wires. jumper them together to see if the brake lights are getting signal to light up....

Another thing to check for is if the part of the brake switch that touches the pedal when not depressed does indeed separate from the pedal when the pedal is depressed. There is a little plastic piston which is spring loaded and it rests on the pedal unless the pedal is depressed. When depressed the piston does not touch the pedal and the brake switch detects this and the brake lights come on assuming the wiring and fuse and cpu are in working order. If the piston does not separate when depressed the switch needs to be readjusted so it does separate when fully depressed.

Also check if your horn works properly because the fuse which is dedicated to the horn is also dedicated to the brake lights. If your horn doesn't work then there is a good chance your fuse is blown and needs replacing. Check the following and then update your situation for further help.

my horn works occasionally, some days it works some days it doesnt, but the brake lights have always worked, what fuse does the horn/ brake lights belong to? ill change that along with checking the other stuff

That would be the "stop" fuse.

If your brake light bulb(s) are fubar your brake light warning in the idiot lights unit on top of the dash would light up.
