Ballenger Motorsports has a few AMP/Tyco connectors that are found all over the FD.

*I made this post in the FD Specific section however, these should be useful across each FD/FC/FB sections.*

Some of the links aren't working correctly, but at one of the vendor sites, I think I found the type of terminals used for the switchgear (headlamp, turn signals).

http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...onnectors.html

Those look to be the correct type and correct connector housings. If so, that means no need to splice existing wires.

These definitely look like the correct 0.250" terminals and connector housings for components like the stereo, fuel pump, and lights.

http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...250/cn250.html

In fact, that site seems to have the most extensive selection of electrical terminals I've seen. Worth a look. I'm definitely going to buy a few housings and terminals and see for myself.

First, in regard to the links, what you did was simply copy and paste the text, not copy the link itself. Long URLs are abbreviated, which is why they didn't work.

Moving along. I ordered some .090, .040, .250 and .312 terminals to see if they really are the correct ones for our connector housings.

I had previously posted a thread about another source for .250 terminals for 1/4" connector housings (stereo, fuel pump, etc.), but the male terminals required a modification to work with stock connector housings. There are actually two different types of .250 terminals from easternbeaver.com, one that have a "catch" on them, and ones that have a slot (the terminal housings have the "catch" in them to hold the terminals in place). The latter is the type of connector housings in our RX7's.

If these terminals work, this is a big deal because we no longer have to salvage wiring harnesses or buy new OEM. For example, if you have a burned out headlamp harness, you could buy new connector shells, terminals and wire and make your own.

Or, if you want to rewire your car for an alarm or add other features, you don't have to splice into older wiring. Alarm installations could be even more stealth because it uses factory connector shells, or use all-black wires to foil a thief (be sure to map all your pins if you do ;-) ).

Okay, I finally got in the electrical terminals and I have some good news and bad news.

First, the good.

I ordered four types of electrical terminals. They are:

1. Sumitomo CN250-312 Series terminals. http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...250/cn250.html

They are available in male and female, and can be purchased as a connector set with housing, or each. There are three different sized terminals for .250 and .312 that handle up to 12awg wire.

2. Sumitomo .090 connectors. http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...250/cn250.html

There are available with connector shells or terminal sets (10 female, 10 male) and handle 22-16awg.

3. Sumitomo .040 connectors. Same details as above. However, I can already tell you that these terminals are too small and incorrect for our application. Well, they looked right.

So, I got them in tonight, and here are my observations.

1. Out of the box and right off the bat. The .312 female terminal is correct for the ones used in our engine bay fuse boxes (the square fuses located near the battery). You can buy these at .35 each, which is much better than buying a spool of 100 from digikey and having another 99 you may never use.

2. Likewise, the .250 terminals are exactly the same as the ones in our harnesses for items like the stereo, fuel pump, factory amps--basically anything with the .250 / 1/4" quick disconnect terminals. These fit the stock housings and require no modification. I crimped both male and female terminals and they fit the housings.

Now, we come to the bad news (there is still some good news, so keep reading):

I purchased the .090 and .040 terminals thinking that they were the correct type judging by what I saw in the pictures--this is a classic lesson in not purchasing anything based solely on what you see in a picture. Of course, I knew I was taking a risk.

For the application involving switchgear--the headlights, Logicon, power window switches, joining body harnesses. The .090 and .040 are too small--neither one is the right size.

However, the .090 terminals are the correct type and size for the power mirror connector shells and anything else that uses these terminal types (I only know about the Power Windows--I think the dome lamp connectors use the same). Like with the .250 terminals, I crimped these and successfully fit them in the stock terminal shells.

So, we out of three, leaving only the sized terminal used for our switchgear, security, and main wiring harnesses. Based on the above information, my best guess is that Sumitomo made the electrical terminals used in 2nd Gen RX7s.

Anyone have any ideas?

Did anything on Vintage Connections website come close? Is the manufacture's visible on the original connector?

The 1/4" terminals and housings on the Vintage Connections site are close, but not 100% correct. The open barrel brass ring terminals offered on Vintage Connections and Eastern Beaver might be the same types used for grounds (I prefer to use closed barrel tinned copper, crimped, soldered and heat shrink).

There is no manufacturer's data visible on the original terminal that I'm still looking for. The one in question is similar in appearance to the Sumitomo .090 locking terminal, but wider.

This particular electrical terminal that I'm looking for is used on:

Switch gear -- including the wiper switch, headlamp switch, and Logicon
The dash harness--joining large harness assemblies together.
The fuse to rear harness connector
Security Module connector

It's tinned, I think supports wire sizes up to 12 awg, and has no marking that I could find. It might be made by Sumitomo and probably is the same or similar series as the .090.

perhaps contacting each website and attaching a photo of the connector you are looking for may help them find the best replacement.

That's probably what I'll have to do... once I borrow a decent camera with a macro function to properly photograph the terminals.

Otherwise, I think we've got some solid information here, and covers a lot of ground in regard to interior side (and some engine harness) terminals.

I made a previous post about a source for 1/4" terminals for our stock connector shells.

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/source-replacement-1-4-terminals-factory-plugs-294639/

Also, a related link concerning the shells

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/replacement-1-4-connector-housings-355235/

I no longer consider my original posting about terminals a valid source for male 1/4" terminals because they require modification--the source that I've posted in this thread are correct. Also, as I pointed out in the thread about the connector shells, they are not the same as the ones in our cars--while the OE terminals will fit, they will not lock in place.

Oh, the bullet connectors that are sold at Vintage Connections and Eastern Beaver will work with the radiator sensors. But I suggest that you use POG (glue wall-filled) heatshrink instead of the clear plastic insulator for added protection.

Update: I might've spoken too soon. The .250 connector shells at Vintage Connections should work with our existing .250 shells. I'm just not sure about whether the locking tabs (that lock the terminal into place inside the connector shell) are on the terminal or inside the shell (the latter is OEM).

Also, in regard to the .312 female terminals for the engine bay fuse box, Eastern Beaver offers brass and tin-plated, with out without the locking tab on the terminal. I just realized that I have no idea whether the fuse box shell has the locking tab to hold the terminal in place or not. However, they are sold at .35 each and any of the female ones sold should fit the engine bay fuse box. I used an unused fuse slot for my fog lamps and it's been reliable.

Okay, I found out a little more.

The terminals are .110" (2.8mm) standard. The unsealed SL Series made by Sumitomo http://swsct.sws.co.jp/components/en/series.asp?s_id=16 seem the closest to what I've been searching for. Unfortunately, the connector shells they offer for that series are limited to 4 and 8-position.

I just realized that I posted the wrong links to the .090 terminals. Plus, there are a few things I want to make sure are clear.

First, the correct link to the Sumitomo .090 terminals:

http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...onnectors.html

Also of interest, a link to another page that has the other types of male and female .312 terminals that can fit the engine bay fuse box, as well as open barrel ring terminals:

http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...en_barrel.html

Finally, a little clarification on the Yazuki .250 connector shells and terminals, as well as a link:

http://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/El...onnectors.html

Vintage Connections also sells .250 terminals, shells and repair kits.

1. If you are reusing the original OEM .250 connector shells and want terminals that will fit inside those shells without any modification, you want to use the male .250 terminals made by Sumitomo that DO NOT have the "catch clip" on the terminal itself.

2. .250 female terminals with or without the catch clip on the terminal itself will fit inside OEM connector shells without any modification.

3. .250 Yazuki connector shells will plug into OEM connector shells.

4. .250 female terminals with the "catch clip" can be used with both OEM and Yazuki shells. However, ones without will only work with the OEM shells.

5. .250 male terminals with the catch clip will fit in an OEM shell ONLY after removing the clip with a pair of wire snippers. If you're fitting original terminals inside a new Yazuki connector shell, they will not lock in place.

I hope this helps (and mods feel free to fix the links in my previous post).

On the .110 terminals that I haven't found a source for. Dimensionally, the male and female terminals are close (if not a match) to the Sumitomo SL and MZ unsealed series (look at their dimensional drawings on their site and in their PDFs). The only thing that keeps me from ordering some is that I can't find an online source that sells them (yet).

Some of the connectors and terminals are Tyco/AMP Econoseal. The turn signal connectors for example are AMP. The big ECU connectors are also made by AMP, although I have not been able to locate them. The s4 ECU stuff is hard to find, although s5 and s6 are easy.
