dumping oil?>?

I was driving my car the other day and the check oil light came on so i pulled over, opened the hood, and there was a bit of smoke coming from the exhaust side of the engine bay. I poked around in the engine bay couldn't find anything on the side of the road that seemed to indicate any problems, so i topped up and went on home.

As I had just done an oil change and I knew that it was already at the low end of the dipstick, and I had just needed an extra quart, i didn't think much of it, so I took off later on to head to a friends place.

When I arrive, the car started to smoke, so I got out and popped the hood expecting a fire as smoke was pouring from everywhere. I noted that there was a big puddle of oil underneath the car. At this point I cancelled my plans and walked to a gas station to buy some more oil. Topped it up again with 2L, and left to go home as no overheating had occurred and I did not have any cash for a tow truck. I pulled over half way and added another quart. As I pulled into the driveway at home, the check oil level light came back on.

I've left it parked since then, and noticed in the morning that there was a trail of oil left by my car, and i can literally follow the oil through my drives, noting that right hand turns, and slower rpm yielded more oil from the appearance of the trail.

I've checked the drain plug, and taken a quick look underneath but with my exams this week I don't have much time to do anything with it. Any ideas on what it could be, so I can limit the amount of time I spend with it.

Passenger's side? If it's a turbo model, I'd suspect the oil supply line. There's nothing off the top of my head that I can think of on an NA engine that is on the passenger's side, but maybe the oil filter has a hole in it, spraying oil over to that side. Maybe the oil filter gasket is leaking and pooling up on top of the engine, then spilling over to the passenger's side during turns.

The oil metering pump is on that side... maybe the gasket is leaking. Some pictures would really help.

Try running the engine in the driveway and rev it to around 3k to see if anything's dripping.
