are you saying you cant bolt it up right because the bottom bolt goes through the tranny to the front side of the transmission to the back.

The bolt hits the tranny before i can get it in the hole. Like the bolt is 2 long or sumthin. I can't get it to line up before it hits the tranny.

I've done two starters in the past two months. The top bolt is a ong one with a nut on the other side. the bottom bolt is the shorter one that has the ground strap attached to it iirc.

If you can't find these bolts your best bet is a mazda dealer.

I also needed some starter bolts. I went to the mazda Dealer and they helped me get the correct ones. So that would be your best bet. I think it cost about 10.00 - 15.00. good luck.

The one that goes under the starter is coarse thread so make sure you have the right one in the right hole or you'll screw up the threads.

Reading this thread nearly drove me nuts trying to figure out the meaning of the question.
The starter MATES to the transmission.

The the bottom hole in the TRANSMISSION for the starter, is a THREADED hole. The threads are in the transmission case.

The upper hole in the transmission, for the starter, is not threaded, and the long starter bolt passes through both the transmission and rear rotor side housing. A nut gets put on that long bolt along with the negative lead from the battery.

And like as My5ABABY said, the lower starter bolt has coarse threads to fit the COARSE THREADS IN THE TRANSMISSION HOUSING.

So make sure the lower bolt has the right threads because if you gall up the threads in the transmission your going to have a mess on your hands. It can be corrected using a helicoil or tapping larger bolt threads and using a larger bolt with the same size threads as the newly tapped hole.
