Nebraska huh? where about are you? Exhaust is up to you...I've had some friends do the custom set up and love it. I went with the racingbeat dual exhaust set up through mazdatrix. If it's not in your budget to buy the good stuff go custom.
here's an old pic of mine after I'd just put it in

Dual > Single

Looks much better, Sounds MUCH better. The sound alone is worth the cost.
Unless you favor the sound of a weed whacker over say a dual engine airplane.

My car has a dual exhaust racing beat setup. with the racing beat downpipe. have you considering looking into downpipes? I also noticed that most FC's do have single exhaust. It all depends on how you want it setup. Ilike my racing beat and they sound sweet too, good luck bro~ and welcome!

You have any pics of your car?

exhaust setup has next to nothing to do with a backfire.

Truth be told Ive seen very well tuned 7'sbackfire....just the nature of the rotaries.

Heck, even new 8's backfire when you hammer them.

for the love of god get rid of those cats! The precat alone is worth a chunk of power and ups the reliability.

Rotarys backfire because they run so rich. But i think the exhaust set up does compound the problem because 7s with stock exhaust dont backfire nearly as much as those with header/downpipe from my own observation, in face i dont remember hearing any afterburn at all when my exhaust was stock. When i started getting holes in the mufflers and stuff it started backfiring. When i replaced with a better flowing (but sealed) set up it got better. I think it has to do with backpressure, i wont attempt to explain why because im not really sure. My set up on my GXL hardly ever backfires and when it does it is very quiet, i dont think my turbo does at all with stock exhaust.

I'd go with a custom single exhaust just make sure they use nice mandrel bent pipes and not some shitty crush bent pipes I saw someone here post their setup that looked brutal with crush bends and 90 degree turns. Single is lighter can't say for sure about flow rate but the y pipe seems like an extra area of resistance and easily the most important factor (for me) it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

yeah but the RB setup is so sexy and has undergone much engineerig as apposed to "bend that pipe so it fits better!"

Ya, this is true, but it also takes a big chunk out of your wallet....A custom straight pipe might work just as well too, but it won't have the clean look to it
