Exclamation Dropped socket into UIM! HELP!

So my dumbass dropped a 12mm socket into my UIM while changing my secondary injectors. I had one of those magnets on a snake, but I think the magnet was too big to reach all the way in there because I couldnt get it out. How far could that socket have gone?! Any other ideas? I've never removed the UIM and with all else that Im doing, I really dont want today to be the day.

If you don't want to remove the manifold, I would try one of those long grabber tools. It is a long flexible hose with claws on the end. Push in the handle and the claws open up. Then let it out and they close around the object. Then pull it out.

damn...umm well i would image you dropped it in the lower intake manifold not the upper intake.... if thats the case was it a deep well socket or a short socket??? that makes a big difference. if its a deep get a different magnet a longer one. if its a short socket you will have to pull the LIM and check for it. hopefully*** you can get it with out tearing the engine apart.... here goes nothing was taking the lower intake manifold off. Of course im not going to turn the motor over. Im afraid that jamming the magnet (and the little grabber thing) down there has forced it into the block somehow. anyone got a good write up for removing the LIM, other than the shop manual?

I see all sorts of stuff in the FSM about the throttle body, but nothing on removing the LIM.

Ok, are you fairly mechanically capable with a good assortment of metric tools?

And is this a turbo?

yeah, i was gonna ask.... but id assume its a non turbo, cause i dont see how anyone could get a socket stuck in the uim of a turbo...

well, its really self explanitory... you dont even need a manuel.. just start unbolting things, taking note of where everything goes that you took off... and voila! its done.... i can have the uim and lim off in 20 minutes....

Not to be getting away from helping our friend here, but I once bought an FC with a blown motor that was previously rebuilt. Upon tearing it apart I discovered a washer inside the cumbustion chamber...oops!

well thats a totally different ball game! this is no easy task.... the turbo has to come off first of all... odds are it went into the motor! that manifold is a straight shot to the motor... lets just hope the rotor is in just the right spot to block it i wish you the best of luck!!

note... hopefully, the socket is too big to actually get through the ports on the housings... ill cross my fingers for ya

now might be a good time to order new water o-ring, LIM and UIM gaskets along with the turbo oil and water gaskets, because leaks really suck.

good luck though

if you get the lower intake manfiold off and the socket is in the chamber, you can slowly rotar the engine by hand(or 19mm wrench) and maybe the socket will be rising up by the motor, but take it slow and dont force anything!

Yeah, good luck on that man.

Btw, if this car isn't your daily driver, I'd highly suggest taking this time to do any mods you might have been waiting on like down pipe or any emmisions removal / block off plates or upgrading to an S5 turbo since you are going to be right there anyways.

Just my .02.

Good luck man.

If she has ot be torn apart, at least a few new seals can offer an unexpected life increasing rebuild. Good luck, hopefully you won't have to tear it up.

I did this once, but it was a small bolt, it did make it all the way into the motor. I found a small magnet with a hole in it and tied it to a peice of fishing line and fed that through the port. It came right out. But I would try the shopvac idea first though.

shopvac it out!!! too bad it's not an na, even if it got all the way down the lim, it would not go anywhere, the sleeves block off most of the port.

OK, so no luck with the shop vac. I even found a powerful "O" shaped magnet and did the string thing (a friends idea). No luck. I did start blocking off the emissions, which I have been putting off for a while. A friend of mine who works for Mazda and knows everything a lot better than me is hopefully coming by tomorrow and will help me through it.
