Driving a 90 GXL cross country...

If you had to drive an RX-7 cross-country, what would you take with you to avoid/fix potential problems?

I bought an RX-7 some 3,000 miles away and need to pick it up. I'm stocking up on parts and things, but wondering what advice you guys could offer in terms of what to take with me. Thanks.

Wow. Driving an RX-7 you don't know the condition of cross country takes some *****. :-)

... I got a Subaru out of a junkyard, fixed the fuel pump, and took it on a 2000 mile trip the following weekend, so I know the feeling, though.

Obviously take a full toolkit, jack + jackstands, a few gallons of water, oil, etc.

I'd also take some hose clamps, new plugs, and a gallon of premix oil.

I'd bring a full set of new hoses, 'cause I'd probably be putting them on at some point anyway. and of course the obvious... if you don't have a few rolls of duct tape you're surely not going to make it

Assuming its a T2, I'd kill the boost, just to be sure you're around home if something in the turbo isn't right.

I bought my 90 GTU sight unseen off e-bay. Flew out to New York and drove it home to Minneapolis. 1300 miles in one day.

I stopped to have the oil changed in NY. Other than that All I brougt was a leatherman and a small tool kit.

Good thing too. Car was flooded when I got there. One trip to the NAPA in queens, 4 spark plugs, some ATF latter, I smoked out the neighborhood and took off for home. Car ran like a champ the whole way home.

PS Do not try this at home. I thought of it more as an adventure than some kind of guranteed smart thing to do....

thanks for the tips guys -- glad to see some others have done similar feats

and I can relate, RockLobster -- this is less about the safest/smartest way to get my car, but the most fun. it'll be good bonding time with the car anyway.

Again, I got lucky though, it could have been a total SNAFU.
