im buying a Tii trans for my car and i need a driveshaft too. the thing is that i dont know what rear end i have. the last owner had the old tii trans installed and im going to replace it with another tii trans. ( i have an 88 n/a vert with the tii trans by the way) . now the question is:

how do i determine if the diff is the stock one or a different diff?

i know it is an open diff but thats about all i know about it. i have no way to reach the previous owner and no records of the diff being changed. any help would be appreciated. i need to find out before i buy the wrong drive shaft.

my drive shaft damaged the trans when the u joint broke and theres no repairing it according to the local shop i took it too. the housing cracked all the way through the center. and ive been almost 2 months without my DD 7

i think all TII diffs were LSD. I haven't really needed/looked up the NA to TII diff. differences.

you arent using an auto driveshaft on a t2 trans connecting to the na rear end are you? it is to short.

If you have a T2 trans and NA rear end you need the mazdatrix shaft.

The only open T2 LSDs were the japanese GT-R models. however you could get a worn t2 lsd, most have a tag on the drain plug that say limited slip though. However, I do believe the T2 rear end will not bolt straight up to the NA axles anyway.

While you're at it, replace the oil seals on the diff and the trans as well.

you can either get a TII to NA driveshaft from Mazdatrix, or a TII diff + TII axles + TII half-shafts.

you see, the thing is when i did my clutch a couple months back i was a little confused as to what trans i really had. my motor (an n/a s4) took all the n/a clutch parts i ordered but the trans took the Tii throw out bearing so i figured it was a Tii trans. i thought the trans could only be mated to the n/a motor with the Tii flywheel etc... or can you mix and match? im planning on getting the Tii rear end on my 7 anyway so if i have an n/a rear end, right now would be a great time to change...

the tii throwout bearing could be the same as the na one. look up mazdatrix part numbers and see if they match.

For all intents and purposes, if your clutch/flywheel are na size, your tranny is most likely na.

ok im going to check now. the parts store sold me two different throw out bearings one for n'a and one for the Tii. even if it was an n/a trans i now have the perfect excuse to convert to Tii since the car isnt driving right now anyway

mazda trix has different part numbers. maybe the idiot at the parts store sold me Tii clutch? oh well. its all getting swapped to Tii well at least the drivetrain is. the motor isnt going in until i find a good condition one and freshen it up with a rebuild... either way i can just sell the parts again, but it would of been a considerable waste of time... unless i take it as a learning experience lol

well i heard one way to check for an lsd is to spin one tire with the car lifted and if the other tire doesnt spin then it is an open diff. is that correct? would a worn lsd act like an open diff in that way? both my tires usually spin when i lose traction anyway, but i do play with the gas pedal lifting up and pressing down to try to get traction when the tires are spinning...

That's the easy way to check if the LSD is in good condition, I forget how it acts when it's worn.

You can measure the diameter or the circumference of the clutch i forget which. Turbo's should be around 240 mm. N/A's are either 205 mm or 225 mm, I don't remember. I think Mazdatrix would have the dimensions.
