you could check a local junkyard or thepartstrader. www.thepartstrader.com and what did you do to break your driveshaft??

i didnt break it i dont think, i bought the car in august and it smelled so it probably had the problem then. they want 540 bux for a new one, but since im doing an engine swap next summer, im not gonna pay that much. do you see any further damage in the transmission if i put it back in till i find another part. also, are 86-88 models have the same driveshaft as tha 91?

I have at least 4 of them here. I'll go outside and look at them now. I have no idea what to sell it for, do you? Don't say $1.00

Do you need TII or n/a?

Mike

This site http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm and there is a price list if you follow the trail at the bottom of the page. Ist go to the junque yard if short on cash. 2nd , go to the yellow pages and look for a shop that builds driveshafts. They can make one out of your old one. Three, go to MAXDATRIX and buy one of their shafts with the replaceable ujoints.

Turbo and N/A driveshaft are not compatable. Bolt pattern is different and the yoke size is different. A local driveshaft shop can make you one cheaper than buying one and they can make it with replacable ujoints.

I can see that the yokes are smaller on one that I have but, the shaft itself appears to be the same size.

Unfortunately, my n/a shaft has a bad front u-joint. Those things really can't be changed? I didn't know that!!!!!

Bring it home, laugh at them while you leave. Order the U-Joints from www.mazdatrix.com or get a whole new driveshaft (both would be cheaper). Fix it (really quick for the swap) drive it back holding a couple of Franklins laughing.

Both MikeL and Demon Racer are outstanding individuals. I've dealt with both and can only give them the highest of ratings when it comes to buying or selling. DemonRacers price seems to be best unless you can find and dissassemble on in the junkyard. Bring a crowbar to hold the yoke while you gorilla out the 4 nuts holding the shaft to the rear yoke. They are put on with a lot of torque!!

Good tip on the crowbar. I think the bolts to the Diff are 14mm so bring 2 of those (or 2 9/16) Thanks for the kind words Ralf!

The 2Gen propeller shaft is just a bad design, and usually starts binding around 100k miles. You could get a used one, but it will not last long, either. IMO buying a used 2Gen propeller shaft makes about as much sense as buying used underwear. I recommend just getting a new shaft from Mazdatrix or your local Mazda dealer. The Mazdatrix shaft will not last any longer than a new Mazda shaft, but at least you can replace the U-joints.

probably..

well, im not trying to get everything out of this shaft that i can. Its more of a 'substitute' till i get enough money for all parts and labor of installing a 'new' jspec tII engine (i know the money...and complications..:o ) so i need a 'new' driveshaft to last me a couple years, not another 80-100,000 miles your imput on situations is always informative evil aviator and if i was going to keep my entire set-up, i WOULD probably buy a mazdatrix w/ replacable u-joints.

But now that i think about it...is it worth more money to take my current engine out, put turboII rotors in it (for the lower compression) and port my 6 ports into 4? I know its risky, but it would save me 100,000 hours of stress and typing on this forum

Talking

When I blew the front and rear U joints to pieces on my old shaft, I had a local driveline shop make me a new shaft. They used Dodge truck U-joints (replaceable), strengthened yolk and thicker rear flange. Cost $375 Canadian and according to them, it "simply will not break".
