Drag properties?

Just a quick question. I would like to here some input on the Fc's drag properties. How much of a difference is there with the headlights being in the up "headlights ON" and the down "Headlights retracted" position?

Also. which stock rear spoiler was more functional. the 86-87 sport "black rubber fin" or the larger better looking (IMO) turbo II / GTU spoiler

Thanks for the input guys

I think there is a large drag increase with the lights up at night. YOu can even hear the air flow change as they go up.

All the factory wings are functional but not in the same way. The sport wing which is the small black one works to reduce drag and is part of the sport/TII aero package which lowered the Sport's drage to .29 from .31 IIRC and the Large one that is normally called the GTU/TII wing creates downforce but increases drage. How much I am not sure but I do know that Icemark said it. There are two variations of the GTU/TII wing one for S4 and one for S5(used on all coupes) and there is a larger black rubber wing that was part of the "Finish Line" package IIRC.

Simply put I'd take the Sport wing any day over the GTU wing. BUt thats just my opinion.

Many people argue that the headlights are in a low-pressure zone so that the added drag is minimal, but not sure exactly what that means.

Id take a GTU spoiler over a sport spoiler any day of the week.

how is a 6x6 verticle plate in the front of the car in a low pressure zone. I agree, very much added drag. If racing at night hold the flash to pass on with lights down

I'd like to remove my remark about the GTU/TURBO spoiler being style better. I acctually prefer wing-less. BUT what kinda functions are you gunna get with that? I currently have a GTU spoiler. and well. blah. i'd like something with more function to it.

I've got Our company's variation of a front lip spoiler. and at high speeds i CAN notice a stability increase.

What i'm concerned with is the lights. All these "cute" pink little diagrams of air flowing over the FC's body are with the lights retracted.

You mean to tell me Mazda did not test high speed stability of the 2nd generation Rx-7 at night?

Gentlemen, i appreciate your input. Any Others??

I dont think aero drag is going to come into place on a 1/4 mile track.

to me it seems pretty simple that because you have a flat peice of something in the front the air will be shifting around it and that will defenitly disrupt air. Since most race cars have no pop ups i say just make your own housing and everything and turn them into non pop ups like on a 300 zx. plus with the motor and everything removed it will weight less. I know my reasoning is falty and all that crap so don't bother flaming.

Just curious, why don't you think that? Whats the difference between a dark street and a lit up track?

well at a track you are only getting up to an aerodynmicaly signifigant speed for a few secs. it would make a difference but probobly no more than the typical variance between runs unless you have trap speeds over 100mph. sorry ricers, wings WILL not make you faster int the quarter.

i'm not sure the t2/gtu wing does anything, we put a hamburger on mine and it stayed there til we hit a bump at 80mph
