At 40mph in 2nd gear you are just getting into the powerband, and you not only kill your momentum, but you also have to immediately shift back into 2nd... Except now you're going the same speed (if not slower) than when you were in 2nd gear before you downshifted... The end result is a battered engine, a beaten tranny, and last but not least... A bruised ego...

Can you read? Honestly.

He never asked if it was okay to downshift to first when going 40 mph, nor would I ever advise anybody to do that.

Read the OP over again, then come back. OK, got it? The Honda was going 40, attempted a "ricer flyby". RX-7 driver was going 25, "downshifted" into second (read: he was in third going 25mph). In this case, I think it'd be perfectly fine to downshift to first @ 25mph in an effort to catch the Honda.

Jesus, people.

As an aside, I've generally heard that TII revs should be kept BELOW 6k because the turbo begins to run too hot. But I don't know much about it because I own an N/A, which happily hits redline and makes power all the damn way.

I think the factory maximum speed int 1st is 25 or so. Be nice to your tranny and suck it up. RX-7's in stock or nearly stock form are not fast.

that honda was definately a low blow, but from second to first at 40mph isn't a good idea. by the time you rev match and get on the gas, its prolly quicker to have waited for the powerband in second.

he's right. That would be stupid and would slow you down because you will realize that its wasn't a good idea after the car tells you...you will feel it. I would have downshifted to 2nd build up and then shift to third.

I personally wouldn't give a **** if a honduh even passed me man. I am not a fast and furious guy I have done some stupid **** in a car (besides sex) and sometimes wonder how I am alive or even missed having an accident. It's not worth it. The track is what this **** is for.

I've had 2 TII trannys and each one Aspec and Jspec would only shift into 1st easily at under 10ish mph. Do NA trannys have 1st gear synchros?

whoever posted that is wrong, i have a transmission break down sheet in front of me which has 5 synchros. not that i needed it for reassurance, just about every transmission has a synchro for first for, dare i say it... 'downshifting!'

I neet to correct myself here:

According to the 1988 owners manual it says,"To avoid possible damage to the clutch,do not shift into first when moving over 10 mph."

my 91 s5 hit 40 in first, 70 in second, and 100 in third, and all that was done to it was a test pipe, and dyno tuned...

I serously doubt you DOWNSHIFED into first at 40. It's been establised already that the car can hit 40. BTW, is yours a S5 or somthing? I thought it was 60 in second. You just ain't supposed to downshift into first over 10 mph.

yeah seriously

I've double clutched 1st plenty of times, just taking corners---you really get a nice kick in the *** when you're slowing down to take a turn and then suddenly you're right in the powerband of your shortest gear.

If you want to get good at double clutching/rev matching, just make a habit of doing it every single time you downshift.

why would you want to get into first????? You would have to slow down to even be able to shift into first!!! You can't just go into first whenever you feel like it. MAN IF YOU HAVE TO ASK, YOU CAN'T DRIVE!!!

i dont know about you guys, but i kinda like letting someone pass me for a bit then blowing by them without a chance of them catching me. why risk your cars tranny just to beat him at the beginning and not be able to see his face when you fly by without a problem.

the only time i have been in a car where we were going about 25 and someone was trying to pass us at 40 was when i was in my friends z with about 600 hp. that was fun. he got to our back bumper and then never got to the front bumper.

I think that it's a better idea to feather the clutch to keep the engine in the power band like when i race a dirtbike / motocross. then you'll ease out the clutch and WOW you take off like a SHOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TR

EDIT: keep in mind this is while you are still in 2nd gear.

try to shove it in next time.....it might cost you your tranny and/or clutch.....but for those 17 seconds or less YOU'LL BE THE KING!!!!!

you may shift into 1st at 10MPH or less to avoid any clutch damage.
