Does your tranny get hot too?

I have an 86 GXL stock. I changed the tranny fluid in the manual xmsn. It still seems to get hot after a short drive. I'm feeling it on the shifter coming up through the boot. All the soundproofing around the stick is gone so air just comes up through there.

Now my throw-out bearing is starting to make noise when I push in the clutch. I only hear it in the drive thru or when I'm at a curb so the sound comes up but I'm sure it will get worse.

Anyone else notice alot of heat coming from the shifter stick?

You need to replace all your shifter boots and bushings. Youd be suprised how much heat and noise those supress, and how much nicer your car will feel once replaced.

Yes they get hot.
That 10 to 20 horsepower difference between FWHP & RWHP ends up mostly as tranny & diff heat.

You think that's hot? With an AT, you have to run the AC in the winter. (well, California winter) There's a reason that the AT's came with an aux electric cooling fan.

Mine used to get pretty hot, but after i changed to Redline MT90 transmission oil, the shifter got a lot cooler, it only gets warm if it heats up at all. Maybe when you changed the transmission oil, you didnt fill it up all the way?

They all get fairly hot, but these things can make it more obvious:

1. Heat shields missing from exhaust. For some reason, many people see these parts as "extra" and throw them out. The heat shields keep the CONSIDERABLE heat generated by the exhaust/cats off the floor and tranmission.

2. Shifter insulation. There are rubber insulators that go underneath the leather shift boot. If those, and the fiber insulation on top of them are missing, then excess heat will come up through the shifter hole.

I'm thinking thats it. The little blanket was gone from inside the leather shift boot. I tried to do some preventive maintenance on my tranny and changed the fluid with 80/90 wt oil and bought new shift bushings on Ebay. The shifter was so sloppy because the bushings were gone. (completely gone or discarded last time it was removed.) I kept putting gear oil in even after it came out the top plug hole and then put the plug back in as it was still draining. I may just look for a piece of insulation to fill inside the area around the leather boot.
