It's not easier or cheaper to use a transmission that they don't even make anymore. It's easier to use development from another platform that's actually made in the same decade. They even put the newest generation MX-5 transmission in the 09 RX-8.

I just quoted this same post from the 2nd Gen FAQ at the top of the page a few days ago. Damn newbies need to learn how to search......

No. Don't use an FD or Rx8 transmission. FD's have garbage pull-style clutches. And unless you skipped it, the rx8 transmission going in an FC is in the FAQ section too. It's too short, so it won't work unless you move the engine back, which is not going to happen. Not worth it for a superfluous gear.

"A good highway gear" + Rx8 tranny does not go well together. When I'm cruising at 75, my Rx8 is at around 3800 RPM... I'd prefer if the 6th gear were taller, as it is, I just normally don't use 5th. I'd like a 5th that's exactly what it is now with a 6th gear that drops 75 MPH to around 2200-2500 RPM.

Cheapest and easiest thing is to lower your crusing speed, or deal with it.
Cliff notes:
You Need to Search
RX-8 5 or 6 speed trans WILL NOT WORK
Miata 6 Speed WILL NOT WORK
Miata 5 speed WILL WORK with the input shaft shortened and the RX-7 Bellhousing and tail end on it. But you will have an outrageuosly short 5th and be at about 4.5 grand at 80 MPH.
Custom Gearing costs a lot of money, and YOU DON'T HAVE IT.
good luck

You can't be serious. That "same old one" hasn't been made for 18 years! I guess you're not aware of the Miata? They used the exact gears and ratios from the 6-speed NB mx-5 box in the 04-08 RX-8.

Additionally, the 5th gear in a 6 speed is 1:1 like 4th in a 5 speed.
Both top gears are the OverDrive (Less than a 1:1 ratio), making it not get the highway gain you want...
The 6 speed has a gear that's somewhere between 1 and 2.

The shifter location being 4" off is no big deal. When using FC transmissions in an FB, the shifter is back about an inch or so. The solution is to cut and redrill that shaft which isn't hard. The RX-8 shifter is very similar. If the shaft needs to be extended, it's not hard to make a new one. The hard part is getting the shaft out. I'm not saying I'd do this mod but I am pointing out that the 4" difference is not an issue for someone who knows what they are doing and who is determined to make it work. Another overlooked area on the RX-8 transmission is the lack of a speedometer cable. It's electronic on that car. When installing one in an FC, you'd need to install an electronic speedometer too.
Yes it can be done and it can be made to work just fine. However there is some effort involved with it and it's more than just simple swapping a transmission.

They stopped making the JDM RX-7 in 2002, The 13B-MSP was first shown on the RX-01, made in 1995, the first full concept RX-8 was at the 2001 Tokyo Auto show, they very well could have used the same transmission in the FD but they chose to go with a weaker 6-speed from the MX-5. They did still make that transmission, they just chose not to use it.
