Does O2 sensor effect starting?
I rebuilt my motor and have been trying to start it but it won't start. My friend said that if the O2 sensor isn't plugged in, or is plugged into the wrong spot, it won't start. I got the O2 sensor plugged into a wire comming off the main harness with a black connector. Wire is green. Is this right? And how long should it take to start this thing? I tried to ATF it since the compression is more then likely lower. Moderately low amount. It smokes when it burns off so I'm sure there is spark. It sputters like it wants to catch, but then it doesn't start and floods out. What else should I do to assist in starting? I wore the battery out, so I swapped it with the one in my truck and it still won't start. Its an automatic so I can't push start it. I read the write up on rotaryresurrection.com and some of the threads on here and nothing is working. Any tips would be appreciated.
thanks

O2 sensors dont effect starting as the past two replies have said. O2 sensors don't work until i believe 600degrees, so they're useless until they reach that temp.

O2 sensor on a RX has NO effect at idle. It's called *being out of the loop*. They are *in the loop* at cruise speeds and then again *out of the loop* when aggresively driving the car.

I double checked, and it is hooked up to a black wire with a yellow connector. I didn't think it was the reason for the no start. Thanks guys.

I don't know wtf, but I took the upper intake off, poured some oil in the lower intake, put it back on and it started right up. I guess I wasn't getting enough oil in through the injector holes, but it started like a normal car. It smokes like you wouldn't believe. I turned it off and turned it back on to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I gotta wait til it gets darker so the neighbors don't call the fire department cause it smokes like a chimney. I was sitting in the seat with the door open and I couldn't see the gauges on the dash, and I got the garage door open with the *** end of the car sticking out!

injector pump isn't installed. The engine idles(poorly) as long as enough oil is in the intake, but after that it dies and doesn't start again. (cranks but no start)

BTW, the oil being there inst essential to the engine running...Its just helps it keep everything lubed. If you have to pour oil in the intake to get it to start ( repeatedly ), you have a car with low compression.

If you are like me and really slathered up the insides as you rebuilt the engine with a lot of vaseline/oil/grease etc, then it'll take a good half hour of constant running to rid yourself of the goop that got shot down the exaust manifold/tail pipe. It is embarassing. Makes the neighbors think you have a blown engine. Keep after it.

Please install the metering oil pump, or at the very least, run some premix to prevent excessive wear.
Your engine will be hard to start until the new seals take a seat in the housings. You'll need to let it idle for a while for this to happen.
