Okay, you guys are missing some info here.
There were two different covers. The Finish line One, that added a rear cover to any FC, and the factory one that came on the 1989-1990 GXL, the 1991 B package, and all S5 TII’s.
The Finish line one, came with two add on parts that bolted right onto the stock rear shock towers, while the stock S5 one, only worked on the shock towers with the mounts for it.
The cool thing about the finish line ones, were that the they were abole to be dis-assembled and fold into half, while the OEM mazda ones were solid.
The other thing was that the finish line one used a vinyl sheet between the top of the covered and the storage bins.

My winter project is going to be a large sheet of balsa veneer with a strengthening lattice of 1/8" x 1/2 inch balsa strips interlaced with the long witdh vertical (like a square honey comb) on the backside to keep it from bowing under gravity, then a very light covering of Poly Resin (dunno yet about using ultra-light fiberglass mat with the resin until i get a good idea of the total weight) to harden it, then the top covered with stock style hatch carpet and the bottom with a layer of fake-silk stuff to hide the re-enforcement..
Should weigh about the same as the stock piece, maybe less, and be a bit stronger once the blasa is coated with the resin (a LOT stronger if i put a layer of 'glass on it, but i"m worried about the total weight of that)
The vertical piece will be similar, but the lattice will be much thinner as gravity's not the factor, but will definately hit that with glass to help protect against brake checked items flying forward into it!!!!
I've alread found the hinge material i'm going to use and the clamps to attach it to the struts and hatch lifters.. I'll post when its done!!
I just HATE the idea of people being able to see my sub!!!

Mazda still should sell them. Download the parts manual from www.teamfc3s.org to get the part #, and then call the local dealership. They're imported from Japan and fairly expensive, but it's OEM new and looks very nice.
If your car had a hatch-cover originally, then you just need the new one. If not you can get the speaker grills with the cargo cover holes & guide, hatch hangers, and hatch guide wires.
If there are no snaps in the carpet behind your seat, you can get some that work with the cargo cover and then rivet/snap them into the carpet.

I have one that is perfectly clean and looks brand new still...sitting in my garage. I've never used it, and the the guy I bought the car from never used it and it sat in his basement. If anyone wants it let me know.

i assume the finish line one was aftermarket? or no?
if it was, do they still offer them?
im craving a cargo cover, and they are very rare from what i've seen ... no one wants to get rid of them and when they do they sell for well over 100 bucks ..

These were two different units.
Again the finish line one was foldable, had vinyl for the front panel and worked on any FC coupe, while the Mazda factory one was not foldable, and only worked on FC's equipped with the rear speaker tower mounts.

i have a black mazda factory one ... but i dont know where the strings attach too ?!
i have a nearly complete black s5 leather interior swapped in my 87 gxl. the strings i dont know how they are hung and the lil plastic pieces in the corners of the hatch (driver side has a light pass side has nothing) dont fit ... prolly hace to drill holes and tap in threads huh?

mine isnt the folding kind its a solid one
im thinking of just finding some small black hooks and zap-straping them on, then hide everything with tape lol.
