Did the lights come on briefly and then go off or did they stay on?

How did your lights tell you it was error code 20? From the list of error codes is there even an error code 20?

it's an '88? then i assume you didn't do the code test correctly, using the wrong pins for the test lamps or built the tester with the anodes backwards. there isn't a code 20 for S4 so i assumed by what you said it was an S5, they shouldn't stay solid either.

Error code 20 is for an S5 (89-91 years) and not for S4's.
