Do fog lights REALLY make a difference?

I've got a '90 TurboII and I'm considering removing the foglights for both weight and airflow reasons (yeah I'm getting picky here, trying to get rid of unwanted crap).

My question is, do the fog lights on the S5 TurboII's (or other ones) REALLY make any difference? I rarely use mine, and can barely even tell when they're on.

When I had mine in my 91 N/A they complimented the headlights when it was really dark, but didn't seem that great in actual fog. So I ditched them. They block a lot of airflow through the brake ducts.

I think the foglights are for looks, and obstructing airflow. No foglights is best.

i Put after market ones on my GTUs. The are the best, i love the why they look, and the have enough of a wide angle to see the sides of the road right in frount of the car. ( Great for midnight runs on the back roads ) But you have to Get good Bright Ones, I think mine are small enough that they dont block too much air.

I guess I wouldn't mind having SMALL ones (like 1" wide or so) I've seen those around.. but then again I don't use them ever..

i still have mine on, they look good when your driving but serve no purpose in lighting imo...they are just too damn dim.

Everyone who has posted that they're useless or you can't tell when they're on have completely misunderstood what they're there for. Foglights are not there to illuminate the road ahead of you, they're they so other people can see you! Although their main use is for foggy conditions, they're a very good idea in any situation where visability is low, but it's not dark enough to need your headlights to see ahead of you. I use mine at dawn or dusk, and anytime it's raining or foggy.

Yeah....they look good but I wish you could turn them on without running the headlights.

Are they 'driving lights' or actual 'fog lights'? Fog lights should have yellow or amber lenses and are mounted really low to get the light under the fog since fog tends to scatter and refract regular lights (ever notice how the fog tends to light up real good?). Sometimes the area at ground level is free of fog but one foot up is not.

And for some reason, (something about 'wavelengths' and such) the yellow lenses filter out the wavelengths that scatter easily, or some such thing. Probably related to those 'Blueblocker' sunglasses.

Driving lights, OTOH, work really well. They light up a straight line in front of the car, when properly aimed, will really outshine your headlights, even the high beams. Fog lights aren't so you can see through fog, its so others can see YOU in fog! Driving lights are ideal for high speed runs at night, because they light up the road for what seems like miles. I drove a porsche 944s with a good set of driving lights, they were incredible. I'm trying to find a good set for my car now.
