differential bearings?

This post is in regards to my s4 clutch type lsd.

The rear end makes a horrible howling/whirring noise. I replaced the wheel bearing and that wasn't the problem. After checking around, I'm assuming the noise is coming from one or more of the bearings in(?) or around(?) the lsd.

Which bearings that could make such a noise are there to replace, and where can I purchase them?

Thanks

theres more than one bearing in any LSD to begin with. some are faily pricey(not too much tho) and others you can buy with pocket money.

where do you experience this whirring noise as far as RPM and speed? is it constant no matter where? or does it periodically come in and out when youre driving?

to be on the safe side buy OEM bearings and ALL OF THEM! when youre replacing one bearing you might as well buy all of them cause it can cause other problems that will be alot more expensive to fix. and you pretty much might as well either rebuild the LSD or replace it

either that or find a used LSD somewhere. i found one for a friend of mine from a S5 TII for $150

changing the fluid would be a band-aid, but helps if your couch diving

The noise changes with speed. The noise increases with the speedometer. I can SLIGHTLY hear it at speeds below 25, and the speed comes about and increases dramatically from then on. The noise only comes in when I am going dead straight or turned slightly right.

I just replaced the fluid and it made no difference.

Where can I get the bearings?

the main (lsd) bearings you can get at a bearing store (industrial) (most rollerbearings are universal).

the pinion bearings and other hardware, you may have to get from mazdatrix.

you also may just need to reset the lash.

whirring noise might have more to do with the ring and pinion . . just a thought . . .

Its not a wheel bearing.

I don't know what size bearing to get, thats why I was wondering what bearings, specifically, are in the diff?

Why and or how could it be the ring and pinion?

because of wear over time. how do you know its not a wheel bearing? have you changed them recently?

as far as size, you'll just have to go to the...ulp.... dealer, or go to mazdatrix. its that simple really, you dont need to know the size if you stick with OEM.
