Remove the entire rear subframe, then install the new differential, then replace the entire assembly.

disconnect: rear half of exhaust, drive shaft (4 nuts/bolts), shocks (2 nuts each), the 2 rear brake lines, 4 bolts that hold the subframe and diff. up, the sublink connector thingy (1 bolt/nut), and get the hell out of the way because at this point it's already falling down.

Differential housing connects to the top of the subframe with 2 nuts, and connects to each halfshaft with 4 nuts each. If you're actually opening up the differential housing, I'm not sure about that stuff, I only swapped out the entire housing.

Some have been able to leave the rear sub-frame mounts loose but connected & just drop the front low enough to get the diff out.

That's how I do it, a hell of a lot easier than dropping the entire subframe (and brake lines/etc, what a pain) I just drop the front, get a long socket in there and unbolt the front mount.after that it's just a matter of wiggling it out.

Yeah, I got mine out without removing the subframe. But for the life of me, I just couldn't get it back in. It might have been doable with a lift, but laying down there, it was just impossible for me.

it took two people and a floor jack for me to be able to do it. One bench pressed it up, we jacked it into place, and I bolted it up.

My brother and I dropped the entire subframe. Good thing he is a mechanic and knows what he is doing. I was lost. Just losening the subframe bolts sounds a lot easier than what we did. We ended up striping one of the subframe bolts(had to re-thread it). Was a pain to get back up there. It took a weekend.

I had the clunking noise before I replaced my differential. Its from a broken differential mount. Make sure you buy one. Maybe its all you need. I needed a new differential too. The front with the stabalizer was what was broken. Causing the differential to move around and bang against the body and subframe. Here's one.

If it's a thunk upon deceleration/accel. Then it's the front differential mount, not the entire differential. If it's a clink, or a clank, then it's a u-joint.
