difference between Auto/Manual ECU??
Is there any difference between the ECU from an Auto and a 5 spd. S5 NA??
Just wondering if the Auto was electronically controlled, and if so, if it used the ECU or had its own computer.

Haven't we ALL heard this
I pulled my FSM for the 91 RX-7. Looked in section F1 page F1-8. There it shows the pinout for the ecu.
Pins 1U and 3N are for automatic trannies. It says EC AT control unit. So the ECU outputs something to the transmission control unit. Also there is some sort of fan switch that is connected to the auto tranny. However, it does not appear to go to the ecu.
Hope that helps. If you wanna picture i can snap one of the page.

The ECU's are the same. No difference at all if the ECU's being discussed are for the same year and series. There's another unit that works with the auto transmission.
See chapter 15 of the 87 series four fsm , page 15-80 for the location of this 4 AT CONTROL UNIT. Looks like its on the passengers side of the car. Your guess is as good as mine if you look at that picture. Anyway, if going from a auto to stick, use the same ECU, BUT, I'll bet money you'll have to mess with some of the wiring since the manual has things like a neutal sw and overdrive switch(fifth gear). Thats all I know about this subject. Not auto inclined.
