Difference between 4-lug and 5-lug suspensions
I've searched to find out the answer to this. I was just curious as to what differences there were between the two as far as the suspension was concerned. for example, would a t2 sway bar bolt into a 4 bolt car? If purchasing after-market suspension components, does a 4-bolt owner have to be worried about receiving the wrong part?
Same suspension except for models that had the auto adjusting option. Convertibles have slightly stiffer springs and thicker rear sway bar. Sway bars all interchangeable WITHIN series (s4, s5).
If swapping between series (front sway bars) you will need the series sway bar links of your car since the control arm brackets for the sway bar links are different. Rear sway bar shouldn't matter since they just bolt into the swing arms directly, but I have not tried to exchange those myself. The FAQ has more information on the suspension differences if you are interested.
You can get around this issue by using after market sway bar links.

Not sure if relevant:
S4 front sway bar end links are metal, S5 is plastic. S4 front control has bolt-on ball joints, S5 the ball joints are integrated into the control arm. I prefer the S4 end links and control arms.

According to the John Matras book "Mazda RX-7: Sports Car Color History," there were two different sway bar sizes for front and rear:
22 mm front - S4 base/SE, 86-87 GXL
24 mm front - S4 Sport, TII, 88 GTU, 88 GXL, Convertible, and all S5
12 mm rear - S4 base/SE, 86-87 GXL, Convertible
14 mm rear - S4 Sport, TII, 88 GTU, 88 GXL, and all S5 (except Convertible)
So according to this book, the 'Vert actually had the smaller rear sway bar.
That IS the difference, you can't swap auto-adjusting struts into non-auto adjusting and expect them to auto adjust, but you can go the other way around.

You could put them on still though, and turn the **** yourself, but i'd rather buy AGXs or something though as most of these are probably blown by now. I know mine were shot when I tooke em' off.
