DID i just destroy my housing with my port job?

By schctrg1 at 2012-05-14
I porting my engine today and i did not realize I traced the template slightly off so I ended up porting 1.2mm into the section of the housing where the oil seal rides. Basically I ported an extra 1.2mm on the side thats closest to the center hole on the intermediate housing. Can I still use my housing? I feel awful about this =(

I dont want to say that its usable, but I have seen worse and they ran fine with no smoking, but those were on race engines.

If I were you though, I would try and get another intermediate plate, just because I wouldnt want to risk another tear down and more downtime.

get a better picture and we can tell you more for certain if it will be an issue. i can't see the oil seal tract at all.

but for anyone else who happens across this....

DO NOT PORT INTO THE OIL SEAL TRACT AT ALL

if your template crosses into the center of the iron, ignore that area.

Please tell me there is hope? Will I find out immediately if I put the engine back together with smoking? Dont know if I can afford another housing =(. I also traced my rotor and placed the template i made against the outer edge of the marking, that is what the white paper is. Will the inner side of the control ring keep oil in?

I personally wouldnt want to install because if it starts to smoke, I do not have the time to take it out and tearing it down again. It goes pretty deep into the outer rings. Like I said before, I have seen worst cuts and it didnt smoke, but I do not like to take that chance.

you live and you learn. I never port into the oil rings, no matter what. Some people like to port it to the boarder line of the ring. Only problem is if you mess up near there, you have a chance of burning oil.

okay so i measure it and at most it exposes 1.5mm of the outer ring to the intake. Thank you for your opinion black knight and everyone else!
