Did i blow my rear?

Drove home from work and my car has been making an odd noise the last 2 weeks and was what i though to be the clutch. So stopped n got gas and when i was ready to leave the lot was empty so i decided to see if i could break the rear end loose in the rain( i know i can just felt like doing it). Tire lit up then some wheel hop started so i let off and then all of a sudden i hear this horrid noise like gears grinding but a million times worse and the car refuses to move under its own power. I know for a fact it isnt the trans or the clutch.

What happens when in gear and the clutch is let out with the car on it make a horrid grinding noise. When you push the car it makes a clicking noise and eventually something binds up and wont let it move. Then if you it push really hard it unbinds. I talked to my dad while i waited for a ride and he thinks it might be the diff. I would jack it up and check it out but i cant tow the car home until monday and its 12 miles away.

I believe it is the diff but would like your guys' opinion.

I do understand it could be the driveshaft(TII) or half shafts(stock n/a).

If it is the diff what series turbo diff should i swap in the S4 or S5? or an FD torsen in a TII diff case. The car will be drag raced sometime in the near future so durability is a good thing and it will be getting a TII engine as soon as i recoop from this breakage.

Sounds like when I blew my original open diff. It made some horrible noises whenever moving.

Get an S4 TII diff. The S5 viscous diffs don't lock up as hard as the clutch type. They're sort of a weak LSD. The FD torsion LSDs are good, but they apparently have some power limitations (~400 hp). Of course, if you're under that mark, it would work well. I'm not sure if it's a drop in conversion though.

Well my plan for this Vert is about 350whp when it is all said n done.

What is the major difference/advantage to the FD torsen over the S4 LSD

There's a description of all 3 types on Ted's site: http://www.fc3spro.com/TECH/MODS/DT/lsd.htm

Correction from before: his site mentions 400 ft. lbs. of torque as a rough breaking point for the torsion LSD. That would mean mid 500s rwhp.

Check your axles first, that's the easiest check. I thought i blew my diff doing the same thing, but turns out it was just the axles.

Ok here is the easiest way to tell ever... Jack up the rear and disconnect the rear axles, and the driveshaft and try to spin the rear end without anything hooked up. It sounds like you chewed up your pinion or ring gears. Might be out of fluid in there and you overheated it, that would be the horrible noise you heard. If it was an axle or something you would be able to tell, and it wouldn't have made such a horrible noise most likely.

i will get it figured out 100% when i get it home. I'm pretty sure its the diff though. I don't thing its an axle I've had an axle in a similar car blow and it didn't make this kind of noise.

Oh well time for a TII diff. thanks for the info link rotary rocket on the diffs. I think I'm going to stick to TII stuff since i went to the FD section and they are putting TII diffs in their cars so it must be a better option

Let your car roll with the clutch disengaged. If you still here the noise is the rear end most likely. You should hear it if you broke any teeth.

well the axles can move a good inch or more with the diff in the car and everything hooked up. It is 100% confirmed that i have a blown differential
