Dead speedometer and lack of PS
Dead speedometer and lack of PS
Yesterday i was driving my '87 rx7 tII and suddenly my speedometer died on me. Once that occured i realized my steering had become extremely tight. This was followed by a constant buzzxing sound coming ffrom my dash.
i have looked at the sticky FC thread and have determined that these are all related to each other but cannot find a remedy anywhere. Please help!!!
oh..and one question..is it safe to drive the car as it is or must i get it repaired before driving. thnx for your help.

i just took the car out for another spin and realized that the car does not make the beeping until i've drive in for a few minutes. The beep is a single beep sound, like a heart monitor. The shop manual related this to a malfunction in the speedometer.
i don't know where to start looking..

speedo cable. make sure its plugged in, and then make sure it hasnt failed. if the speedo needle was jumpy, it prolly failed.
ps uses the signal from the back of the speedometer, so with no speed signal, its confused, and when its confused it beeps.
its all in the fsm

the speedometer is a large cable attached to the transmission... its may become unplugged or failed. its a long cable that screws into the side of the tranny, you should be able to find it easy enough

FSM= Farkin Stupid Mazda!!..what else did ya think it was?..Factory Service manual?..Ya..right,..Nice try!..
and I guess this must have happened on an S5..as I had NO speedo on my S4 and there was No buzzer sound..nothing..The only thing that found was that the Cruise Control did not work.(as it gets the signal from the Speedo). When I plugged the Cable back into the Cluster, the Cruise was operational again.

you guys keep saying "make sure its plugged in" but plugged into where? Where am i to check? I have looked under the steering wheel and located, what i believe to be, the PS control unit. there is a 20 pin connector plug into it. According to the diagram in the FSM the e wire is the PS sensor. it seems to be plugged in.
I have an 87, and for a long time the speedo didnt work. About 5 minutes after beginning to drive, It would beep-beep-beep and not stop. I replaced the gear that goes into the trans, because truthfully it looked like it had gotten real hot and wasnt it wasnt of proper diameter. I think mine was pink. Check to see what kind of rear-end ratio you have, because I think they made 3 differant speedo gears (cant remember). Anyways, pull it out of trans and check the color or count the teeth. It was the problem with mine, but the PS wasnt affected nearly as much as yours. Thats what they mean by see if its connected. If you know anything about cars, you should be able to locate it easily, because its on the drivers side, and well...its the only thing that looks like a cable. You wont loose very much trans fluid either. Everyone pretty much nailed it, so start there before looking elsewhere as a source for you problem
i was the previous owner of therealmogwai's car.
i owned it since 2006 and the speedo never went for me, so i think the gearing itself should be ok.
does anyone have a picture of the general area to look for this wire?

Ok..the Power steering CPU is on the Driver's side..by the fuse Box.you have to Remove the Plastic Side(kick panel) to get at it.The Speedometer Cable runs TO the Gauges(speedometer Gauge)..it is a Cable, not a WIRE..so this Plugs into the back of the cluster With a Plstic Compression RIng(squeeze the plastic Tab and pull back it back,It disconnects from the Back of the speedo)..the Cable then runs down to the Transmission,Tail stock,Driver's side...you undo the BIG collared end around the End of the cable(i think it is either a 19 mm or a 21mm..I could be wrong)..then pull it comes out.If you want to remove the GEAR then undo the 10mm nuts on the transmission where the Cable was inserted at the transmission. It will come out with a couple taps from a Hammer(don't wreck the threads tapping it!)/..it will come out as a little threaded part with a gear on it,that went into the transmission and onto/into the tail stock..oh Watch for Laeking Trans fluid..you will loose a BIT!..it is Simple to remove and replace...the Speedo gives the Power steering signal so that it Knows when to Assist the steering,If the speedometer Doesn't work, then your Power steering will be Screwy too.
